Old Schrade knife factory to be demolished

Once the demolition of the former Imperial Schrade knife factory outside of Ellenville is completed, officials hope a buyer will come in and build a new business. TIMES

Town of Wawarsing officials hope the foundation of an old factory will eventually become home to a new source of jobs for the community.

After a prolonged permit debate, the town’s building department approved demolition of the former Imperial Schrade knife factory off Route 209 outside Ellenville. The building’s owners, Amtrust Realty Corp., began to tear down the building at the end of 2014, but lacked a permit to do so at the time. Then-building inspector Bryant Arms halted the demolition and had the company apply for a permit to take down the structure.

Amtrust has now been given approval to demolish the building, said Arms. The company has begun the process by removing asbestos from the structure.

It is unknown how long it will take to demolish the building, town Supervisor Leonard Distel said, but there are workers on site daily. After the asbestos is safely removed, the structure will be razed.
The building’s 8-acre concrete foundation will be left on site for future development, Arms said. After the building is taken down, the slab will be examined for any pits or hazards, and those will have to be remediated before the permit is closed.

The demolition process should be done within a year, Distel said. Once only the slab remains, Amtrust will market the property to potential buyers.

“Hopefully down the road someone will come in and move into the building and will hopefully create more jobs for the Ellenville area,” Distel said.

I don't know what to say.
I'm saddened yet hope there is employment for some in the future on this historic site.

This is the old Channelmaster facility, correct? Perhaps lrv or another member can post some inside/outside pictures for us.

Sorry, that is all I have...

I have some pictures that were taken in August 2015. Unfortunately I cannot post them......I am just a general member.....
These show what the factory looked like when the demolition was halted.

I found this online:

Not the original factory but the original Schrade factory in Ellenville is still standing and in use. A window company is occupying part of it and I know that Canal Street Cutlery also had a presence there along with some of Schrade's tooling. I haven't heard anything lately though. Any word on whether CSC has moved or other update?

The Channelmaster building in the photographs is the one the company moved into circa 1984 when Imperial was bought, moved from Providence, and most operations were moved from the older Schrade facility on Canal Street which CSC now occupies. Demolition of the building on the outside of town on route 209 will not affect the CSC occupied building.

That is correct....Canal Street Cutlery does occupy a part of the old Schrade facility on Canal Street, this being the building that Schrade relocated from. Canal Street Cutlery actually only occupies a small part of the old factory and as eyegor stated, the rest of the building is occupied by a window company.

Canal Street Cutlery is actually located upstairs from the old Shipping docks, which is where I worked as a younger man. I actually worked at Schrade for 1 year prior to making the Military a career. As I stated I working in shipping, setting up the stand up knife display cabinets with inserts and knives to fill the displays as well as overstock of knives. We would then pack them and ship them out. We did hundreds of these a week....I can still see the stacks of displays lined up awaiting the trucks to pick them up. I sure do miss that place....it was a great company to work for.

Thanks for the update guys. Sorry if I caused any confusion. I know the difference between the Canal St. location and the Rt. 209 location. I just wasn't sure whether CSC was still there or had found other quarters.

Wow!
Great pic's & history here guys.
Nothin like a usa made blade....hopefully the site will be used for another thriving business.
We've lost too many jobs to China,Mexico etc....

Great to hear from you Tom Chase...must be very nostalgic for you...didn't your relations work there as well including I believe your Aunty? Ms Debbie Chase, Schrade historian.........are you still kissing my babies good night..each night mate?.....Hoo Roo

Yes Sir, a lot of my family worked at Schrade over the years. All combined more than 200 years of service! Debbie Chase is/was actually my Sister-in-Law!

And yes, I tuck those little babies in each night when I am home. I spend as much time, as I can, in my knife room just sitting in my rocking chair and gazing at my gathering. I gotten to the point in my collecting that I only buy the HIGH QUALITY pieces, such as those beauties you were so gracious to send my way. There isn't much I lack, however, I still search out what I can....LOL

Hi Tom, I offered Larry $30 each for those old knives, looks like you talked him into parting with them.
I was glad to see them back in the USA. Ken.

GLENNBAD,

That Imperial Schrade Corp sign you posted the picture of, above, now resides in Western Maryland with me....lol
I was in New York this past week and stopped by the demo site and talked the guy in charge into letting me remove it for posterity! He said I could have it IF I could remove it without going into the yard. Wasn't easy working through the chain link to remove the bolts, however, it was worth it in my opinion.

Nice Save!

Myself I was eyeballing that little gas grill under the dilapidated patio cover next to the doorway.

Imagine the stories that were told during the employee cookouts.:D

Ha! Mancave. I was thinking more like headboard.;)
