Denim as a strop

I went and made a strop from chamois and used stop cream or whatever it's called. Seemed to work pretty well.

However, I swear, using my jeans as a strop does an amazing job !

Is this just my imagination. Went from push cutting newspaper only with some concentration to a no brainer using my leg

You are not crazy, I stromp with cardboard, not loaded mind you, to great results. I have also used canvas and it does work since you are just polishing.

i have essentially stropped my knives with the round handle of a small file. i just use a circular motion to rub the bur off of the edge. i also use the inside of my belt for a quick little strop. i just pull the tail out of the belt loops and keep it in the belt buckle, and use the inside of the tail. i also sometimes use my boots or a piece of anything that will pull the edge over.

it is entirely possible that denim works well.

Walking in the woods, I routinely use my knife to cut off a thorn branch or weeds, and then strop the blade on my sleeve or pants legs, whether denim or canvas.

This cleans the plant juice off the blade and restores the edge. It works especially well on convex edges.

I fail at sharpening but i've kept knives sharp longer by doing this than i would have normally. It seems to work pretty good.

Stropping on your jeans
Yep...I tried it and it works. I'm not doing it anymore. I do best with things that have a high tolerance for error. This isn't one of them.

Darwin Award...not me, I make up for lack of skill with plenty of caution.

I'm not worried about the Award, I'm worried about the pain!

Ah, nice. I routinely wipe my pocketknife on my jeans after use. Usually I do 3-4 swipes per side on my pants leg, to clean off any skin oils or whatever I've been cutting.

Nice to know I might be doing something right!

I've used Denim, quite a bit... but I've also experimented with toothpaste + denim... The toothpaste has silica grit in it, and my thinking was that it would help in polishing the blade.

Do you load your jeans with the toothpaste?:D

Right, while I'm wearing them... and usually in public places, so that I can enjoy the funny looks... <sarcasm>

I've only tried this on an old, no-longer-wearable denim. :)

I atrop my blade 5 or 6 times per side on my jeans every time I use it. It seems to keep the edge longer, regardless of the grind, or the steel.
