Denim for sheath material?

Well I have some old jeans lying around and was wondering how suitable denim would be for a knife sheath for a large fixed blade? I was going to have the seam of one of the legs be one of the sides of the sheath and then sew the the rest till its closed tightly. Then I was going to do another layer and instead of sewing again I was planning on riveting the sheath. Is this plausible or just a bad idea?

Denim's not really blade-proof which is the whole reason to have a sheath: protection from a sharp blade while carrying and/or storing. Denim flexes way too much and sitting on the sheath could cut it open. Not much between you and the blade! (Why not just stick your fixed blade in your back pocket? Same result :)

I could see doing a kydex sheath and then contact-cementing denim over the kydex for a jean look that would hide from the sheeple better...

Alright I thougth it was a bad idea :o . Would there be a way to make the denim stiffer so it would be less flexible?

It's a matter of using a plastic liner .I use something like polyethylene and heat with a propane torch to form ,then cover with fabric.I use heavy Cordura nylon which is far more durable than cotton.

Here's one of mine ,scandinavian type of cordura lined with plastic.

Cool! For the micarta sheath would all I have to do is form it around the blade and handle like a leather sheath?

I would form it in two solid slabs and 'carve' the two halves---with recess for blade---like you would a wood sheath. Then 'bond' it into one piece and finish the outside to suit.

You could saturate it with epoxy resin and wet mold it to the knife and when cured it would be a hard plastic like Kydex. I would use several layers.

I've done the same thing using carry straps, and seatbelts. The end result seems fairly rugged but sorta looks cheesy, :jerkit: like I found it at the dollar store with a plastic kids knife in it.

Although the wetform micarta idea sounds interesting........!?

you could cover the fabric in Wood glue. It Will get stiff. but the downside is is its not waterproof. you maybe could cover IT in clear spray on rubbber.its plausible but not a very good idea!

Use a leather welt at a minimum. Not sure I like the idea of doing the home laminate for the body. I'd definitely line it with dear or pig skin (veg tanned).
