I posted this in the general knife discussion forum and, while it had 47 views, it received no comments. I'm hoping someone in here knows more.

"This is not meant to imply anything, negative or positive. I am simply asking if anything has happened to Dennis Riley? He is mentioned as a JS in ABS in several places but the new ABS site does not have him mentioned on the JS or MS list. Anyone know why or is it a mistake that should be corrected?"

I also noticed that Luciano Dorneles is missing from the ABS Journeyman smith list.
He received his "JS" a few years ago. I have a message into the ABS to see if he and Dennis may have just been inadvertently left off the list.

I will report back when I find out something.

The ABS Journeyman Smith list published on their new website is correct. It's between the ABS and these fine makers as to why they are no longer included on it.

Huuummmp. So, reading between the lines, if someone passes the test for JS or MS they have to continue to pay dues or they delete their name off the "passed" list? Seems kind of CS to me.

I know nothing of Dennis' status, and make no assumptions, as well as hope my post here doesn't hijack this thread!
I am of the JS class of '08.
In the past, when the newly classified individual was presented with the stamp reflecting his status, either JS or MS, the person was required to PAY 35 or 40 dollars, I'm not sure. This was to cover the cost of the stamp.
But, consider this - if the person chose to no longer pay ABS dues, the ABS could NOT require him/her to relinquish the stamp, as the person could say he OWNED it because he had payed for it.
Not any more.
When I got my stamp in '08, I owed nothing.
I payed nothing.
But, instead, was required to sign a waiver that I was only exercising "rights' to use the stamp, that it still belonged to the ABS and that if I ever ceased paying my ABS dues I would relinquish the stamp UPON DEMAND.
Now, maybe these guys simply have not payed their dues and are not in good standing.
I have always admired Dennis' knives and see that one currently listed shows that he is still using the ABS "JS" stamp.
Maybe we'll find out more.

I talked with Dennis Yesterday, I ask him what the status of his stamp was. At this point he has not paid his dues. And was still making his decision, his collectors will play into that decision. He has no problem with the ABS. He's just not sure what he wants to do. As you should know Dennis is one of the good guys. I wish him the best. Larry Bailey

What does "CS" mean?

Totally un-related to the dues issue, Dennis and Luciano Dorneles,
I can certainly see why the ABS would want to retain the "right" to re-claim "their" stamp in the event a "JS" or "MS" maker started representing the ABS in an undesirable manner. Say for example, taking deposits and not delivering knives. I believe the ABS also has a mediation program to help resolve disputes between ABS makers and customers/collectors.

Thanks for the translation guys. I think. :o

I don't see much of a controversy. Organizations have rules. You don't have to join, but you do have to play by their rules if you do.

All I can say about Dennis is I like his knives and I hope he makes the best choice for him.
