Does anybody know if it is possible to use dental floss for snares used to catch small game birds or squirrels etc ?

If you braided it maybe . Dental floss is strong . It doesn,t seem to have a lot of abrasion resistance . It can be used to make an emergency bow string so that tells you it does have strength in multiple braided lengths .

I would think it would work in a snare that would suspend the animal which would limit its ability to struggle/abraid the line . Lets wait and see what people who do more trapping say .

Dental floss is good stuff. I've used it to sew up packs and it holds long term. I wouldn't hesitate to use it for snares and traps if that was all I had. Braiding it will significanly increase its utility for such a thing.

Since I discovered #4 waxed polyester line I haven't used the dental floss for other than teeth. I buy it in black and OD green. Mac

Hey Pict ? Could you use that #4 as dental floss ? L:O:L

I know we tied a guy up with dental floss . We just wound it round him and a pillar with not much thought as to method . Our haphazard attempt at confinement only lasted a few seconds .
He ripped it apart like..............well like dental floss .

You guys try some fast flight bow string material you won't rip that apart like dental floss.

I always carry some dental floss, I break the plastic case it comes in and just carry the roll, like mentioned, I use it mainly for sewing thread and it works outstanding. I would double and twist and use it for fishing also if it came to it, seems to me it should work fine for drop lines on a trot line, or limb lines, but I have not tried it for such. Chris

Fastflight is great stuff . I use it on servings for my Irish linen bowstrings . The skill was in making the string . I don,t mind using fastflight unless I am in a primitive tournament . (rarely happens.) The fastflight protects the linen which while great for braiding is a lot more fragile . I have used a fastflight string and serving for over two years and literally over ten thousand shots with a lot of transportation and brush abuse thrown in .

The seving has come loose (not broken) and been repaired(not replaced) at least three times . The string will soon be relegated to second string and my linen moved up to first position .

No more fast flight it is way expensive .

Oops thread hijack , sorry .

Dental floss is cheap , compact and it appears quite versatile .

You might be able to use it as lure, too, if you leave the little chunks of meat on it.

Kevin,

Cliff could use it as floss. You have to be a true barbarian.

Pit man,

I live in Brazil and buy it downtown so my source would probably run you a bit of change. You can most likely find it in craft or leather stores.

It is used for heavy duty sewing, like packs, holsters, and saddles. It is very good for just about anything you want to sew or tie. I braid it to make neck cords for my compass'. Mac

Dental floss is great stuff and a roll should be in every survival kit or glove box. The next step up for strength are the seven inner strands of true 550 paracord (actually military parachute shroud line).

Dust and grime can abrade dental floss over time. I keep mine wrapped in a little cling wrap to keep clean. Good stuff and you get a lot in a small roll.
