I was clearing some debris today and chopping up 2x2s that had some large chicken wire stapples in them , which I had not seen, in addition to impacting a couple of rocks.....and. At the end of the day I had dents on the curve of the blade and along the straight edge.
My question is do I grind the blade down the approximately 1mm depth of the largest dent ?
And assuming I keep the factory angle the whole edge will recede by 1mm?
Any input would be great !

dont grind it!!!!!

take a chef steel and run it over the dings until they straighten out.

might take some time, but it will be just like new.

OK...on the straight edge it is definately rolled but on the curve where its the deepest the damage is more like a gouge than a roll.

Try a smooth steel first. Most of the damage should just be deformations and not chips (loss of metal) so you will be able to get the edge back without too much difficulty. After that, a strop will get the edge back to hair poppin' sharp.

Don't go to the stones before you try to fix the current edge. No need to remove steel if it all can be worked back into a good working edge.

so long as there is no metal missing, it can be realigned.

trust me, ive done it.

you will be much happier having only used some elbow grease rather than removing metal with a grinder.

MORIMOTOM and RVO3VOM speak the truth!

I used a big hard screwdriver shaft on mine after I dinged it. If you've still got all the infi, you just need to persuade it to go back where you want it!

Yup this is part of the so called Magic of INFI.

Damage you think will need ground out can just be Steeled or Crock sticked back into place.

A lot of the time anyway.

Try it, you'll like it.

If all else fails, send it in and I'll have the janitor fix it right up for you!!!

Rick brings up a good point - It doesn't have to be a sharpening steel or other specialized tool. I've steeled INFI edges back in line with whatever was handy at the time, like the mentioned screwdriver shaft, and even the spines of other knives. Most any hardened steel with the right shape will do. The important part is watching your angle at the edge.

A good butchers steel works best, but I have also straightened out edges using a ceramic rod. Use very light pressure and just strop it away from the edge at the grind angle. INFI responds to steeling much like a good spring steel or 5160 does. Maybe even better.

Great advice everyone I hope it works as I could hardly sleep last night after seeing the damage and ultimately posting my demise. In fact its kind of depressing, but everyone is encouraging..I mean even The Man had something to say, WOW !
Ill try the steel and screwdriver for starters.

If you can't get it where you want it, Busse can. No need worrying, one way or the other it will be fixed.

I have never had success with this. I've done it lightly, I've done it with a lot of pressure and for a lot of passes but never "realigned" any dents or rolls to the point where they wouldnt still need a proper sharpening.

What am I missing here?

I have used the screw driver as a "steel" and gotten some very light marks out before. The last dents in my edge of My FBMLE were from some pea sized stones that had gotten on my chopping block. They did not steel right out, but steeling made much much less metal needed to be removed. Do it first, and then see where you are at. For me it was just the excuse I had been looking for to convex my edge.

Let's Drink?. . . That implies that we stopped and need to get started again. . . .. . . :D

See? I like to help when I can... I'm a giver like that.;)

i had the same trouble just now! although it wasnt with INFI it was with a bussekin. my chefs metal rod thingamabob popped that roll nearly back into place. i thought i was going to have to hit the stone hard or a grinder. the knife isnt hair popping but it still cuts paper!

thanks for the advice!
