There is such a huge selection of quality production tactical knives that its really hard to recomend just one. If you are looking for a medium to large, fixed blade "tactical" knife, I would first check these two makers:

Cold Steel - makes a variety of "tactical" knives including daggers like their Peackeepers, bowie-style blades like their ODA, OSS or UMK, and even a tanto style Recon Tanto.

SOG Knives - Makes a similar line with their dagger bladed Daggert and their bowie bladed Trident, Tigershark and SOG Bowie.

Some other possibilities are the Benchmade Nimvarus, Buck Strider, or Gerber Silver Trident. All these companies make high quality production knives in the $100-200 range. If you are looking for something a bit cheaper, consider Ontario Knife Co. or Ka-Bar. Both are long-time suppliers of US miliary blades, and produce solid, economical knives.

This list is by no means all inclusive, but it I don't think you can really go wrong with any of these manufacture's products. :)

HELLO AGAIN!

ok maybe i should be more specific. the ones i really like are the chris reeves neil
roberts warrior knife. i like that design but the price is a little much for my budget and i like some of the customs knives on this site. the busse knives are cool too, a little to big though. i want something that would be a comfortable carry for long periods of time and not impedeing at all. so something that kinda resembles one of those but not as much cost. i guess that is asking a lot for not paying as much. so my taste might just be to much for what i can afford. thanks alot for replying oh and if any wants to donate one of those that would be cool! :o

thanks again

If you like Busse, check out Swamp Rat Knife Works. It's their sister company and produce nice knives at a lower price point.

Another vote for the Ranger Knives RD6.

The Busse Satin Jack TAC has a 6” blade, and is currently available from the Busse Company Store. This is just shorter than the Warrior, and is noticeably lighter to carry.

Octave,

A Cold Steel SRK might be just the ticket for you. Not fancy at all, but pretty tough and serviceable. You won't mind using it for just about anything, and scratching/ruining its appearance shouldn't be a concern, since it doesn't cost that much. Probably available in the PX, and pretty popular with grunts, I'm given to understand. A Becker CU7 or Crewman would be another solid choice as well. If you want to step up a bit, something from Swamp Rat.

Octave210,

Whats your job in the military and what kind of unit are you deploying with. Many guys that come back from overseas will tell you that all they needed was some folding knife and a multi-tool. Most of those that took fixed blades wound up storing them in thier bags cause they became a burden to carry will all their gear. I know one unit that deployed to Iraq that required that they carry thier M-9 bayonets so carrying 2 fixed blades became a hassle. Also as some recently returning soldiers have put it, "A Garrison has sprung up in Bahgdad" and regulations are tighting up over there.

I second if you can get one from a dealer, as the website say he is away at the moment.

Of course Strider makes fixed blades also, call them direct and let them know you are leaving soon and they will square you away

You don't say where you are deploying to or what you will be doing.

If you are a "ground-pounder" and will be working in the field then the unit you will be with will often specify what type of gear you will be required to carry and use. The issue knife-bayonet will often be the only fixed blade allowed to be carried.

I would hold off spending any major bucks and buying a knife until you are at your permanent station. Then get the advice of the old timers and check with the CO as to what to get.

If you are in a support role it probably doesn't matter as you will not have much use for a fixed knife anyhow.

Here is the best link I have found to the current M9 knife-bayonet (alot more knife than bayonet).

I don't know if your interested in a custom or not??? If you are send me an E-mail and maybe we can make a deal.....I forge carbon steel so if you have your heart set on stainless I can't help you out....:D

well, we work with "special people'"that usaully have their own gear and they suggest having a fixed blade that is not issued because they have broken on more than one occaison. All i know is it will be to either OIF or OEF no specific's given.

Check out the Howling Rat or Bandicoot. Both with ~4" blades, but different profiles. Much easier to carry than 6" or larger blades and much more handier.

Don't get more than you need and then end up leaving it behind because it is too cumbersome.

If you want Custom then look at what canadains are offering there are alot of amazing knives at CKG Members Pages.(canadian Knife Makers Guilde)

plus most of the knives are in $CND not $USD so if your from the states you can get a great knife 4 less.

As others have said and you know you need -- get the Cold Steel SRK. It won't break, and it won't break the bank, either.
