Hi all,
I have seen a few postings asking about which knife for deployment and was thinking dont the military supply a knife such as the ontario M9 bayonet or something similar for use by military personel?

hello,

Not always just depends on alot of unpredictable "military stuff" and alot of airmen, soldiers, marines, and sailors like to have their own personal blades to suit them or really don't trust mass produced military issue blades. you've never been in the military huh? :D

No I have not been in the military and I dont know how it works but it seems very interesting. I am keen on the M9 bayonet but dont have one as they are to expensive here. So dont the army issue a bayonet for the M16 rifles?

hey,

i wasn't trying to be rude so i hope you didnt take it that way. I am in the Air Force and when we augment Army positions we dont' get issued any of the good stuff even though we do the same jobs and usally when we deploy in our buckets we dont' get issued them either. They are stii in the mindframe that we dont' do anything besides sit in chairs(chair force). which by the way is not all the way true. at least not in my case.

thanks

Most of the posts I've seen concerning the most useful knives in a combat theater boil down to those that have "been there" recommending a decent-quality folder (but not too expensive, because it will probably get lost or stolen) and a good multi-tool.

The consensus is usually that big knives will either not be allowed by your commander, or will be mostly useless and just add extra weight for you to lug around. If you just must carry a fixed blade, pick something small and tough. Aim for utility rather than a "fighting knife" as the chances of you needing the latter are vanishingly small.
