Hi Mike,

Is there a reason that you only want to learn desert survival? At ANEW, we teach global survival...based around the "five survival essentials." My belief is that if you learn these essentials along with various methods of how to meet them, you can survive in any environment in the world. The needs are always the same...the only thing that changes is how you go about meeting them. Improvising in the key. Come to our winter class in January and one of our summer classes and you will have a full understanding of GLOBAL survival (don't limit yourself). :>)

Hi Mike,

I agree with Greg. The way Greg has organized his instructional program you will have an understanding of the real basics of survival needs. His method is efficient and practical. When I first saw how he organized his classes I began to understand why he was one of the Air Forces top survival instructors. The guy knows his stuff and best of all... he can transmit it to his students.

At the very least take a look at his book.

Ron You make me blush :>)

MM, Watch Ron's excellent tapes (the best tapes on wilderness living and survival I have ever seen), read my book, and when you are ready for a hands on experience...we'll give you an outstanding learning opportunity at ANEW. :>) read it, see it, do it!

I'm not trying to limit myself.Since, as you've indicated, its possible to learn the essentials of survival anywhere, I'd like to learn them in a desert environment. I live in a desert. I enjoy the desert and like spending time there. I could and probably will at some point take courses in other environments.

That being said, I'd like to take one of your courses. Do you do any in So. Cal.? I'm basicaly poor and need to keep my travel costs down. That's why I'm mostly interested in something in CA.

Jeff,
I believe you are referring MM to an article about abodude. MM, See this link in the CRK forum...yes, really it is there
biggrin.gif
, for some more info:

Hollow Handle - Uses? http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum29/HTML/000049.html

AND OF COURSE we KnifeKnuts managed to clarify a few things in the article

. The author chose in part on the same approach that MM has mentioned, locale. She also mentioned the schools by Greg and Ron. To nitpick some more, she got Ron's address wrong (CA not the new ID)...but the telephone and website correct, so he and Karen can relax.

P.S. There is also a list of schools including Ron's and Greg's

here: http://www.equipped.com/srvschol.htm

Abodude is first on the list, in AZ...just in case you do not pick up the article.

Jeff and Donald-
Thanks for the info. I had run across equiped.com yesterday. That is a really good site. NWSOS looks like it could have potential. I like abodude as well. They're kind of expensive though, for me at least.

I found someone here in L.A., Christopher Nyerges and the School of Self Reliance. Is anyone familiar with this?

Jeff-
Yes, American Survival Guide is where I first became aware of Chris Nyerges, then yesterday I surfed onto his website. I contacted him via email and he's sending me a schedule via snail mail. So, we'll see. I'm still interested in any other courses being offered in CA.

I've known Christopher (he hates being called Chris) for well over 20 years. We met on a TV program we were both doing and became friends immediatly. I can't say enough good things about him. The man REALLY knows his stuff. He is versed in every aspect of survival and practices daily. He is the kind of man who lives his craft.

There are a lot of folks who claim to be skilled professionals and who write but most don't have the dirt time old Christopher has. If you can... take a class. Even if it is only a weekender.

Christopher also has a nice little book out that relates mostly to survival in the Chapparal of California but is filled with useful primitive skill information.

Say hello for me if you contact him. I'm proud to call him a friend.

Doc Ron-
Thanks for the endorsement of Christopher (and the clarification on his preferance for his first name

). I'm looking forward to getting his schedule for Y2k. I'm also going to check out his book/s. I do alot of hiking in the local mountains and so I've spent alot of time in the chaparal. I would certainly benefit from learning more about that environment.
