In two days I'm going camping to Anza borrego desert, Comming back next year. I would like to hear your opinion, If you had the chance to spend some time in the desert. What would want to practice in the desert environment?? My one thing is I don't want to damage the area.
I want to know what any of you guys would have wanted to practice or know to do or make when surviving in the desert.
I already done a few traps and did catch some mice with out hurting them. So I let them go in the morning. There are lots of jack rabbits out there but I want to figure out a way to catch one with out killing or hurting them. Some of them must be around 5-6lb avg and I seen some much bigger.
Fire was fairly easy to make out there. With everything being dry.
for shelter lots of small caves and over hanging rocks.
Water now thats the hard part Where I camp I know of a small pool that bubbles from the ground with lots of palms and the right time of the year small dates that are tasty. Once a dug a hole and found some wet dirt. But it wasn't easy and I had a shovel.
Navigation can be very tricky out there. It is much easier to get lost then if you are hiking in the high sierra. Lots of animal trails that go in circles and valleys that twist and turn. I found that sometimes it makes sense to hike to a high mountain so you can get your bearings.. at the very least you better have a campass to keep your bearing and stay on course after you come down. Having a map with a campass is even better. Add a GPS to the campass and the map and you are golden. Thats one thing I would tell everyone. Navigation in this type of a desert is very confusing very easy to get lost and it happened to me twice. Once a use a GPS to figure where i was and where I wanted to be. The other time It were suppsed to be a short hike to take some pics. Didnt have a GPS but did have a campass. After a hard hour of climbing I figured out where I were and got back to camp right before it got dark. I were about a mile or so from camp and it took me almost two hours to get back.
I want to do some more work on traps and rope making. Traps cause they are fun to play with. Rope cause I do think having a rope can make a huge diffrence when you need to make or build something.
