First off, thank you all for the information shared in this forum. I have spend weeks reading and still have a lot to go through.

I have drawn several desings, but the following, I think, will be the first one I will bring to life. I will do stock removal and I want to keep the first one relatively small. I intend for this blade to be a general purpose/utility knife that should be able to withstand outdoor emergency use; sort of like the ESEE Izula. It will be 1/8" or 3/16" thick 1084 (if I can find it).

I would like the handle to be G10, but also be able to accept 550 cord wrapping. The sheath will be kydex. If it can be worn around the neck, it would be nice, but it is not a requirement.

I have tried different dimmensions, but after cutting several cardboard samples, I stuck with the following:

A few questions I have:

1. For my intended use, do you see any flaws?
2. Will the handle be too wide if wrapped with 550 cord?
3. Would I gain anything by dropping the point a little? It seems that I would only lose cutting edge.

Any other advice will be appreciated.

Thanks. :)

I think your dimensions are okay. If it were me, I would drop the point a bit. Not necessarily to a spear point but not the straight back spine. I would also change the handle shape a bit especially towards the back.

It looks like the handle would be pretty wide with paracord. You could contour the handle profile some and round the butt end and add quite a bit in comfort. A small knife will need to be comfortable in the hand or it won't be fun to use at all.

These are just my opinions. Not necessarily right. I like the choil area for the first finger though.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with your design but personally I like a little more belly. It's a good thing to do your research, cut out models and try them out, etc...

A couple threads with pics that I would recommend looking at (knives of similar dimension/tasks) are the following:

And there's also these 4 drawings (I tried finding the original thread these were posted in to give proper credit but couldn't find it in my search...):

I would drop the point a hair and give it some belly (the cutting edge length could stay the same if you did both). I think the handle looks workable for a three and 1/2 finger grip.

Thank you, all. I made a few different drop point versions of this and I agree that it did improve appearance. Due to the small blade, I think a partial drop point (by this I mean drop not starting at the ricasso, but further away from the handle) might fit better to allow for thumb notches.

Thanks again and I will keep you all updated.
