Hey, My friend gifted me this cool lookin knife, just curious what this slit and section of grooves are for (the orange circle)? Do they have a function? (It's called a survival knife, there is paracord wrapped around it that you can use in an emergency I guess) So not sure if the slit and groves are purposeful or just decoration. My friend said it was a blood groove, but that is the fuller, which it does have (the blue rectangle)

It's not letting me upload the image so here is an imgur link with it

That multi faceted area is not only a propriety enhanced opening feature that allows for lightning fast blade deployment when trouble rears its ugly head, its patented negative spacing can collect DNA from an assailant, not to overlook the subtle integral skull crusher.......

It’s just something that someone thought would make the knife more likely to sell.
Enjoy your gift.

It blue area is called a "fuller" or "blood groove". A fuller serves to stiffen a sword blade, but serves no purpose on a knife other than cosmetics. The term "blood groove" is sometimes used, but the term has no basis in reality.

The area in the orange circle might be considered an extreme form of "jimping", a notched surface to give your thumb better traction should you extend it out over the blade for better control.

A new knife is always fun to have. Enjoy.

I looked up the knife in question. Without too many spoilers, it is an inexpensive assisted folder with "survival knife" aesthetics. The features have more to do with looking cool than performing well. It could be fun for a brief outing but I wouldn't want to rely on it.

Thank your friend and use this as a jumping-off point to get into a new hobby. ;)

Are they sharp?
If so, might be a "saw back" for notching?

Probably just decorations

Looks similar to a strike/pull on a slipjoint, maybe it's an opening feature to deploy the knife, just shaped in a way they thought looked cool. if you use it like a spyderhole thumb flicking does it work? Looks like its in the right position for an opening hole.

The orange part looks like jimping, but it's probably mostly cosmetic as you said. Enjoy the new knife!
