When I see knives made from files, every one (so far) has been cut out of the blade of the file; do any makers actually keep/use the tail of the file, using it for a hidden tang? If not, is there a technical reason or is it simply a design choice?

If you don t anneal file it is good practice to cut piece and break it .That way you will know what you have .....Actually it is good because you will know before anneal that you have right file for knife , not case hardened one .

Don t shape tail part for hidden tang before.Leave space for tang but first grind blade .That way you have enough flat surface to hold blade in jig or in hand . . .
First I grind bevels than I grind shape of tang / red line on picture/

Whatever you do FIRST you must be sure that you have fully hardened file .Personally I will never anneal file ,ceramic belts are very happy when they grind hard steel :D I just temper them twice on 200 or 250 celsius .....+ I don t think that I can HT it again better then Nicholson . . .. .good luck
