So I have an idea for a new Gun Stock. I've never seen one like it and did a search and can't find anything made even remotely like it. But I have no real engineering background and wouldn't know where to begin with making a prototype. You guys have any suggestions for someone with a really good idea, but no idea how to make it into a reality?

Go to Brownells dot com and see what they have for books.
Stock building is fairly straight forward but you need a few special scrapers that you will find there.
Build your first stock or 2 out of some junk softwood until you get the hang of the tools.

Unless you can run a CAD program, use clay. Seriously. Mock it up in clay first. It's easy to use and it'll allow you to make some adjustments to it. Then wood. If you don't want to make it out of wood yourself, there are tons of custom stock builders. Send the clay model to one of them.

My first thought was some type of Styrofoam from a hobby place. You probably have the tools at home to carve it. Wear a mask and eye protection tho to keep the floaties out.

Thanks guys. Once I have a model, do I need to patent it or just present it to a company for consideration or what. I mean most stocks look alike anyway so I doubt you can patent the rifle stock.

Patenting is a whole other ball of wax. You would only be able to patent it if it is clearly different from anything else. You'd have to do a patent search first to make sure about that. If you present it to a company without patenting it, they can try to steal it from you.

Wow anything cheaper? I looked those up. I don't have thousands of dollars to spend on software I may only use once.

Yes there are free cad programs out there they just aren't as.....easy to work with in my option. google has sketch-up which is free and not all that bad. I am sure there are others.

Thanks Nate. You're the Man. Free but hard I can live with. LOL
