Does anyne out there have a line on designs for a 'flesher' or an ulu (Inuit skinning and meat knife). I've had a request from a possible client that is fed up with the commercial products he has tried and wants something custom made...but he's not sure which way he wants to go. His primary use will be for fleshing hides (mostly buck and doe skins) with intent of tanning.

I suggested a half moon ulu with a shallow (11 to 15 degree) chisel edge (something that can sweep in a long cut and with the reverse side for scraping) but I wanted to get some feed back from the folks on the Bladeforum.

Any takers?

I apreciate any comments that you may find appropriate.

The end product I think was good but getting it to that point(shaping) was a b*tch. Have fun

Dav, in the August issue of Blade Magazine on pg 153 there is a design by Cass Harris that might be adapted to your needs. It has e teardrop shaped handle wide belly and a clip point. Sorry I don't have a scanner.

Dennis Dej Jardins makes a freaky model with "power curve blade geometry," that would probably get your prospective customer all excited. It's listed in Knives '98 on page 170. I don't have a scanner either, sorry.
