Lately I have been obsessing over a certain type of knife. I believe the inspiration came from a Kiridashi knife. Because I spend most of my working day at a desk, my latest obsession is a desk knife. I don't know if it exists anywhere but my imagination. The thought comes from those fancy pens that people have in holders on their desk.

It would be to replace the pen with a knife. A simple yet elegant way to have a knife handy. My thought would be, to get a kiridashi and make a simple holder from a block of wood. Has anyone seen something like this? Has anyone shared the same thought? Or am I just bored at my desk.

I think that traditional Kiridashi would look pretty cool displayed in the wood box pictured. Forget about the holder, that wood box looks awesome.

I have a Rockstead, and when I'm not carrying/using it, I keep it displayed in its original wood box. I love the way it looks in the box lol!

Plenty of people have shared the thought! In fact, here's a desk knife from the man, the legend, Tony Bose:

Have a look at Richard Rogers sharpie model. I think k it's perfect for a desk(ridden) pen.

I would think a nice William Henry folder would compliment any office desk. They're not cheap, though, and for good reason.

Make sure you lock it up though each night. One of cleaning people stole mine the one day I forgot to put it away in the desk drawer.

I made a miniture skinner out of 01 scrap. No scales, 1/16" thick. Put a mustard Patina on it. It hangs on a small rare earth magnet on a metal cabinet in my cubicle. No sheath, just hanging tip up on the magnet. Its about 2 1/2" OAL.

Very convenient to have a blade there for random tasks.

One morning I got to my desk and there was a note from one of my co workers thanking me because he had used the knife while I wasn't there. made my day.

Get a Lime Cutter from Suwannee Knives, that knife can have many purposes and configured to your liking. They're ascetically pleasing - they're all handmade- and will handle any chore with ease at your desk.

And a somewhat more attainable Case production version:

I like this a lot too.

Old desk sets with traditional pens, ink wells, blotters, etc. used to have very pretty letter openers too. I always thought that a pretty knife sitting on a desk worked as well as a letter opener.

If I were allowed to have such a thing on open display at work, I always thought a small fixed blade plunged into a sweet chunk of jagged walnut a la Excaliber in the stone would be very cool.

I had this idea a few years ago and couldn't get much discussion going on the forum.
My thought was to do this at home using a knife the size of a paring knife, and making a simple sheath for it. I have several pencil cups on my desk and I thought a simple sheath could be strapped to the side of a pencil cup. Then when I need the knife I pull it out and use it, and then put it back. I've noticed recently that BRKT makes several blades in a size that would be good for this use. I have a couple of small fixed blades that would work well, I just haven't figured out how to make a good sheath yet. I think it would be easy with Kydex or leather, I'm just not a sheath maker.

I would not consider doing this at work for some of the reasons mentioned. I don't seem to need a knife often at work and I always have a knife clipped in my pocket. At home depending on my clothes I might or might not have a knife on me, but I usually have several in the desk drawer. Having a knife in a stand on the desk would just be a little more convenient.

A large, carved nutbowl with picks and crackers inset on the side, filled with various in-shell autumn nuts, a dagger, stiletto, kiridashi or tanto laying atop them...or stuck in with the pickset.....

or maybe a "Pen is Mightier Than The Sword" type theme...bury a good knife in a nice display of something with a desk pen.
