Hey guys my wife gave me this wonderful wooden box to hold my knifes in. It is actually an old silver ware holder. So my question is do yo uany of you use dessicants to keep moisture out of your knife boxes? Or do you guys just store them with oil on them?
The only knives I have are knives I edc so they dont stay in there forever. But sometimes if I havent gotten around to sharpening them they might be in there for a little while.

Just keep the knives maintained in the first place and a light coat of oil when storing. Should have no problems.

I cannot see any harm in using a desiccant for long term storage. You can probably just use the packets included in the shoeboxes. If youd rather buy them, desiccant packs are very cheap and reusable. why not, then, take the extra step in protecting your nicer knives?

On stored non-stainless steel items I usually include some of that anti-ox paper that some tools and X-Acto blades come shipped in. It's a vapor phase chemical that prevents rust/corrosion. Russian 7.62X39 steel cased ammo comes wrapped in it ("Wolf" brand, IIRC).

I've heard of people using long grain rice in a kind of sache' as a desicant. The thought is to "recharge" it by nuking it in the microwave to dehydrate. I haven't heard of problems, mold, etc.

Go to the grocery store, buy a container of Tidy Cat Crystals.

Make sure you get the 100$ crystals not the stuff mixed with clay. (it will be clear with blue crystals mixed in)

It's 100% Silica Gel...exact same stuff in desiccant packs.

I personally use Coffee filters and a stapler to make my own packs.

I use the Dessicants packs, that I've bought from a flower store. (used to dissect plants)
I place a tennis ball sized packet in a pelican bag, were I store all my knives. It works wonders and for a long time!

I keep most of my knives in an ammo box, and yes I do leave a few dessicant packs in there. Learned its a good idea for that storage setup a couple years ago when my "collection" was mostly Gerber crap and started to show surface rust.
