I have knife that recently had its detent ball crack/chip and now no matter what I do I get this metal on metal grinding whenever I open/close it. Do I dare try to sand the rough part a bit? Still holds up good, just can't stand the "nails on chalk board" shriek that it makes.

Who is the maker, and how did it crack?? My buddy had a knife detent crack because of rust from storage in a tackle box, and the maker (spyderco) replaced the knife for him.
I wouldn't try to sand it, that needs to be replaced for safety.

Spyderco, I was just opening it so that it would break in (no pun intended) and it suddenly felt like their was sand or something..

OR
DIY.. Beware possible void warrenty.
If it is in your abilities

Open it up
Clean degrease.

Run a cotton ball or your nail to feel for the rough spots.

Lightly sand the burr off with 600 or greater.
Polish the pivot area of the detent ball. Flitz.

And since its opened up. polish the bushings.

Lube reasemble and check for smoothness
