Detent ball missing

I just bought a kershaw model 1775, used from an auction site, and I noticed the detent ball was missing. Anyone know what size a replacement would be.

I have emailed them but haven't heard back yet.

If they won't do it I believe a forum member here (STR) might be able to. At least I've seen them mention it before, not sure if they do so currently.

I have a feeling kershaw will not fix it as it is a discontinued model. I am hoping to hear back from someone who can tell me the size so I can order one and install it myself, if possible.

I did hear back from kershaw. They are no help, stating they don't carry parts because it is discontinued but I could send it in and they will most likely issue me a credit for a new knife. Are they nuts? All i asked was what the detent ball size was and they give me the run around. This is the second time I've gotten less then impressive help from customer service at Kershaw. What good is a lifetime warranty if the maker decideds a knifes "lifetime" is over. And since I am a second owner with no original receipt they probably would deny a warranty claim anyway.

That sounds like a fair offer...

I mean... should Ford still supply parts for the Model T?

This is a model I've been looking for for some time now and not one I want replaced. It's not like I need a liner, just a small ball bearing. Did Ford offer a lifetime warranty on the model T? If they did then parts should still be available. That's the idea of a lifetime warranty.

No.

That's not what a lifetime warranty is. It doesn't guarantee that they'll keep parts for every single product they make until the end of time. That's logistically impossible.

Sometimes you will be offered a "trade in" for a newer product since they cannot fix your old product for whatever reason (of which there are many). This isn't unique to Kershaw, or even the knife business in general. Just about every company under the sun that offers a lifetime warranty on something has a similar policy.

Besides, they don't offer a lifetime warranty, they offer a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner. Their offer is actually very generous given your situation. The only party being unreasonable is you.

If you want to know the size of the detent ball, specifically ask. If they don't answer, oh well. You have other options at hand, use them.

My original message to kershaw:
I just noticed the detent ball on my 1775 is missing. Could you tell me what size it is?

Their response:
I am sorry to say that model of Kershaw has been discontinued and we no longer carry any parts to repair it.

What would you say my other options are?

Make it clear that you just want to repair it yourself. If they still don't give you the size, contact a service provider to do it for you. If you don't want to do that, call it a day and take the credit.

You already know your options, you just don't like them. That's life.

You sound a little butt hurt to me. Do you work for Kershaw customer service cause you're a rude MF. Where on here have I stated that I don't like my options? I fully intend on fixing the knife myself all I asked for was the size of a detent ball. This is the second occasion that I have had issues with simple questions from their customer service. The last time being what was the size of a washer used on a production knife. Neither of these were/are highly technical questions but for some reason customer service doesn't have the answer.

Play nice, the mods don't look kindly on name calling.

So you already know where to get the ball from you just need the size, right? I might could help you out with the size.

I know a few online places to buy replacements but kershaw has since emailed me saying the size is proprietary so they can not tell me.

Alright. The BACK of the detent hole on my 1775 measures larger than 0.054 inches but smaller than 0.060. I am using a wire spark plug gap tool and those are the two closest sizes. I would suggest take your knife apart and check it yourself. But that gets you in the ball park. If this were my knife, I would start at the smallest size (0.054") and order through 0.060". YMMV.

I am thinking that I have seen an actual wire feeler gauge in an auto parts store. I can't seem to find it on the company's website.

Thanks I really appreciate the help. I have a micrometer but I couldn't get an accurate measurement on it. Would have never thought to use a gap tool. That's the kind of thinking I come here for.

So the site I'm looking at says a .059 drill bit for setting a .0625 detent. Sounds about right. Thanks again.

Sounds like your getting things squared away. The spark plug tool wasn't ideal but it is what I had.

Let us know how it turns out!
