I found out that in general, the white scaled SAK's are sold only in Switzerland. I have a white-scaled Spartan, from an ebay lot from several years ago, and I noticed yesterday that it has a distinct detent when you open the screwdriver/bottle opener all the way. I can't catch the blade tang well in a pic, but when you look at the tang in the closed position, there is definitely a little nib sticking up, and a corresponding dished-out area inside, on the backspring.

This isn't present on any of my other SAK's, that I know of. Anybody know what's up with this?

I found that first on a new green Alox cadet. While my silver and red did not, the green one did. Of my 27 SAK's, I have 8 that have it.

Thanks for pointing that out, turns out my white SwissChamp seems to have what your describing but not my red Tinker. Maybe its a way to secure the bottle opener/screwdriver more securely? Maybe it helps in the 90 degree position? Those are the only reasons I can think of for there being a detent.

I took one of mine when I discovered it. It just locks the driver into place more than the others.

Well, I'm not alone! I wonder why Vic does this on some of their knives, but not on others? Rolling change? I wonder what perspective SwissBianco might have on this?

my champion plus has it on the in-line phillips. it also has it on the bottle opener. i bought it brand new a few months ago.

91mm SAKs have had that for quite a while now. 84mm SAKs don't, AFAIK. I don't know about 111mm SAKs.

I'm guessing it might have been a distinguishing feature to counter Wenger's auto-locking bottle opener/screwdriver.

Actually some newer 84mm got the same feature.my 2010 yellow sportsman got the secure locking. Only the older maybe pre 2005-06 lack the detent.

AFAIK this first appeared on the in-line Phillips driver when it was updated in 2002. It then appeared on the 91mm cap lifter/screwdriver some time after 2005 and then, most recently, on the 84mm version. It's function is to simple make it less likely for the tool to fold back on itself, when being used as a screwdriver, by having the 'nub' engage with the backspring.
