Has anyone ever had a new hole drilled for their detent on their millie before? I bought a military from a guy on bf and it was an orange handle and black blade. Well he didn't tell me that the detent and hole didn't match up. So I sent it off to spyderco. Spyderco said they cannot fix this problem for me. I thought I read somewhere that Spyderco drilled a new hole for a detent somewhere. Has anyone had this done?

I'd send it back to whomever you bought it from. They didn't switch out the liner lock, just the blade.

Or do it yourself with a small, rounded dremel diamond coated ball. Like the first or second one in the pic below, just the right size (you can compare it to the detente ball.) Just drill it at the tip of the arc the ball is making.

You may want a drill press for that. A dremel can be hard to control, and you don't want to be playing with a hardened steel blade. I'd say pad it and vise the blade at the very least before using a dremel.

I think you may be the owner of the only Spyderco "Goblin" in existence.
Are you sure the seller won't make it right? I'd send him a PM and get his
thoughts on the matter.

IIRC the Rob switched everything (lockbar, other liner, blade, and stop pin) for the "Goblin" Military. This one sounds like just the blade has been switched.

Yeah, it's rather odd. I always thought everything matched up perfectly.

Did you pay with Paypal? If so you usually have 45-60 days to open a dispute, usually they work out in the injured party's favor.

if the detent's not right then the liner's wrong, and if the liner's wrong then the lockup might be compromised. i'm sure you've thought of this but it's worth saying anyway...

(and you also have to figure that the "doner" knife is bobbing around out there, and that it also may have a compromised lock)

Thanks for your input guys, ya I may have to dremmel it myself. I just dont understand why spyderco wouldnt drill a hole, I sent them $25 for the repair, but they told me it wasn't under warranty. Ya I understand its not under warranty thats why I sent money. Oh well, the lockup is real nice on it with no blade play. The detent just doesn't quite line up with the hole. Bode225 sold it to me. I don't think i'll try to get my money back bc I really like the knife, just need a hole drilled and it will be perfect. I may try the dremmel idea.

Just for the record, that was not my "Goblin." Mine is right here.

I switched everything in pairs, lockbars, liners etc. Lockup is perfect on mine. Someone didn't do a proper swap and passed it off on you, that sucks.

Be careful with the Dremel, but it's not hard. Start with a hard steel punch, mark the spot and then start slow with the diamond bit. I've done it many times (Kershaw leeks don't have a hole; mine do!) and only messed up once (bit skated off. Knife was fine, but had a scratch on the blade).

Have fun!

just curious--how do you determine where to make the hole? seems like not a lot of room for error but i'm sure there's a trick.

Whenever I've done it, I just go to the very end of the arc the detente ball naturally scribes on the blade. That's it. You can actually use marker or something all over the area and let the ball remove the ink in an ark. Tap a mark at the end and grind away.

I'd recommend picking up a good steel punch, a small carbide glass drill bit (spade head).

Punch your spot, then use the carbide spade bit to drill into the steel. If you really need to try the dremel, but the spade bit should do the job, and it will cut hardened steel no problem.

Right on. I had a feeling that one wasn't yours. :D

I know I dont post much here on BF mostly just on USN and the Spyderco forum... I also dont do Spyderco Mods an more, but it this one bugs me and is an easy fix. If you would like Jesse, send her to me. I'll drill a new hole for you. Shoot me a pm or email at southardb @ gmail(dot)com
