Detent

Just purchased another Emerson. This time it's a CQC 8, and I have to say it's larger than I thought originally. And I like it. Just one issue is that it seems to have a very loose detent. I can shake open the knife easily even with the pivot screwed down.

Also to note when the knife is not in a closed or fully opened position, it makes a rattle noise when shaken. Does that have anything to do with a detent perhaps?

The 2011 CQC-8 I have just received does not do this. It appears as though the detent on the lock side simply makes contact on the blade while in the open or closed position but does not at any time go into the detent hole (not sure why).

The detent on the non-lock side appears to go into the hole and retains the blade. I have my pivot set relatively tight and it has not yet loosened up. I do not care for the wave feature so the tight pivot does not bother me while using the thumb disk on left or right hand.

You may want to send your knife in for service by contacting Emerson.

I love the blade design on this knife. I hope Emerson helps you get this issue squared away and you enjoy it in good health.

The rattling is intentional, it's caused by the freely rotating stop pin. If it really bothers you that much some Teflon tape in stop pin holes on the g10 will silence it.

The rattling is not so bad. I just recently tried to pass my knife to someone only to have it whipped open. Surprise on both ends. Perhaps I'll try to bend the second detent in.

Hmm. I've moved the second detent over quite a bit and I'm afraid of moving it much more. The blade retention is better, but still flicks open with a quick wrist movement. Any suggestions?

Just send the knife back to Emerson for warranty work. It sounds like you got a dud.
