Howdy, all.

This is one of my first real posts in the forums and its great to be here and learn from so many of the real knife heads out there. I have attempted to search this topic and haven't found exactly what I'm looking for, though I admit I may not be the best at using the search function yet, so go easy on me if I missed an existing thread addressing this topic.

I am looking at getting into a new Sebenza 21 and I am torn between steels. I am looking for anybody's experience with the difference between the Devin Thomas Damascus that is used by Chris Reeve and the S35VN that is used on most of his other knives. More specifically, I am curious how the edge retention is on the Damascus and how that compares to his other blades. Is the Damascus steel he uses suitable for EDC or is it more decorative in nature?

I guess in general, I'm just looking for experiences with both steels, comparisons and contrasts, within the context of an EDC use.

Thanks.

I have a small sebenza classic probably over 10yrs old I believe the original blade was s30v. After owning it for a year I upgraded the blade to a Devin Thomas Raindrop Damascus blade with a blue thumb stud for contrast. I have always been very happy with it, excellent blade retention .

its suitable but your paying for decoration not cutting performance, the s35vn is the high performance steel.

I don't think there is a huge difference between the two. I love my Damascus personally.

Here are a couple of great threads on the subject:

Thread 1

Thread 2

After reading these, you'll find that not only is Damascus strong, but some users actually prefer it to the standard S35vn blade.

Of course, you have to decide for yourself if it's worth the price difference, but as far as use goes either one will serve you well.
