I was in Home Depot yesterday, and the DeWalt multi-tool pack looked like a cool gift for about $20. But before I gave it to friends and family, I had to buy it myself!
I am glad I did, because after a few minutes with both tools, it's clear to me that they aren't worth the $20. (This is the best link I can find.) The model number is DWHT72419L.
The good, IMHO:
- The price, maybe? $20 for two tools. It comes in a gift-box package that you re-configure. Cool, I guess. I suspect the packaging is worth more than the tool.
- The bottle opener works well!
- Cool colors and Made in the USA brand (though these are made in China, obviously).
The bad, IMHO:
- Ergos are horrible. For both tools. The smaller tool is especially hard to use, while the pliers have some prominent hot-spots.
- Scissor spring is very strong on both tools, to the point it's hard to close the tool.
- The pivot in the pliers sounds and feels like it has a teaspoon of sand added. I tried cleaning it, with no luck.
- On one side of the pliers, tools pull out easily. On the other side, they are nearly impossible to extract.
I don't expect much for a $20 set of pocket tools, but these tools fell below my expectations. I won't be buying these as gifts.
