They promised me a DFC after so many flight missions. This has been done since WW11.The Air Medal I recieved w/bronze V device and without. This simply means that you did something. That would give me five rows.I do not bother to decorate my uniform beyond the CIB and wings.I do wear the Silver Star which was for a particular action.I look at the new service and wonder how they got those medals. In my day you get the Nat.Def. Med.Campaing Med,Svce.Med.Then you get Army Commendation Med. ,Bronze Star, some other junk. So, where is my Distinguished Flying Cross?I`ll trade an Air Medal and one Bronze, make that two Bronze Stars.

In short;I am unhappy that I do not have a DFC.,when the less worthy do.

GHOST,
Again I find myself heartily agreeing with you.
The medal thing got totally out of control during VN and has gotten even more ridiculous since.
To assuage their guilt of politically non-justified wars our 'leaders' have seen fit to award everything from showing up to not wrecking your airplane.
My first medal was my "alive in '65" Nat Def goodie, my last was from some mid-east potantate. At least the foreign governments were up front about the awards: you did us a favor, thanks. Here's a nice fancy medal.
Remember when LBJ's son-in-law got a DFC for kicking cargo out of a C-130 during VN? That's when we all should have just said "BS!!"

About the Fall of `66,after going back to The Iron Triangle,(Didn`t we do this last year?), we realized "It don`t mean nut`in". I shouldn`t forget that.Napolean came up with the idea that men would die for pretty bits of ribbon. The first pretty on my chest was Jump Wings.I felt so much better to have something besides space there. Now,I don`t have room for everything on a flight suit,or a fatigue shirt.Just the; I was here too`s, were three rows. Now, I see more than that on people who could not possibly have seen combat,at least not long enough to aquire fruit salad.Go figure.Check this out.I was giving a patrol warning order and someone came by saying that Batt. had an allocation of Army Commendation Medals anyone not have one who wants one? One of my boys said,Well Ghost did something outstanding the other day.I`d stayed back and covered an extract.Business as usual really. That`s how I got the ACM,without V device. The V would have required someone to write.Who want`s to do that while drops of sweat drip onto the paper?I was written up a few times but, when the guy could dictate it to a clerk. Then it goes for approval.Inf. types move, lose records;I found that I had a medal that I didn`t even know about a few years ago with a 201 file check. One thing is for certain;it doesn`t matter now.

My uncle always says he never got a medal for a mission that went smoothly - nobody ever heard about them if they went smoothly. Like in baseball - the diving catch makes the 11PM news, but the best outfielders are under the ball to begin with.

Just some thoughts.
