DFW Area Knife Knuts?

Hey there,

I'm trying to minimize the downtime as I have a few Spydies back at the factory getting sharpened after the DFW Gun Show knife sharpener made me look like an imbecile...

Is there anyone in the DFW area that can either: A. Show me how to get a good edge with my lansky and diamond stones? or B. Sharpen my ZT0450 in S35VN for me?

I've watched all of the videos, have a Bachelor's degree, slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night, and served in the military, but none of that can overcome the fact that this 30 year old was raised by a single working mom and no one taught me how to properly sharpen a knife.

I live in McKinney, but can travel!

Any help is appreciated, and I hope y'all are having a great week!

-Chris

Live in DFW but sorry, have 0 experience with the Lansky system.
Just curious but how did the guy at the gun show make you look dumb?
Did he make the knives worse?

I'm on the W. side of Dallas. I use a DMT Aligner system and I can get a pretty good edge with it. I would think the Lansky would work similarly.

Are you putting ink on the edge with a marker? Are you using a very strong magnifier to check the edge?

I used to live in Richardson. ;)

Lansky and DMT Aligner work exactly the same. If you can do one, you can do the other, as well as any other 'system' like KME, WE, or EPA.

Aaron's vid is pretty good demo on how to use the Lansky ...

As already mentioned, use a Sharpie or other marker to black-out the edge so that when you use the stone, you can tell if you have the correct angle.

Hey Chris I'm way the hell out west in granbury but I'd be glad to help you out if nobody closer can. I've fiddled with a Lansky and prefer my Dmt and free handing it. Let me know if I can help.

Hey Chris I live in Burleson and have a wicked edge that I use but just a thought, I like the Lansky "crock" box with 2 different ceramic rods, it has 2 setting of 20 and 25 degrees but is very easy to use and great for fast touch ups and is only $20 at academy. If I can help shoot me a message, good luck with your blades.

Hi Chris.

I live in Euless and I'm pretty handy with a lansky. I can get a pretty sweet mirror on most anything given the proper time. I'll be back in town soon, I'd be happy to show you how i do it. I'd also be happy to put a mirror on it for you if you want. If you're interested, I can email you some pics of a few of the knives I've done recently

Respectfully,

Mike

CricketDave we are not so far apart. I am in Mineral Wells, just north of you.

There are plenty of people already closer to you willing to help, but just to throw this in. I use the Sharpmaker and have the full range of grits (diamond, med, fine, ex-fine) and I can get quite nice edges with it. The Diamone Rods are the real kicker with the sharpaker. The make reprofiling much much much easier, especially on more wear resistant steels. That would be my recommendation. I have not used any other systems except for benchstones. For larger blades, I like stones, for folders, I use my sharpmaker because I can get a nice even bevel.
