Last month I received shipments of few Tamang knives that have a super
strong wooden handle made out of a special redish wood, Dhar.

The tree that produces this red colored wood grows in southern Nepal, a
flatland that resembles Louisiana. It is warm, humid and full of mosquitos.

The wood is so strong that it is used to make a Theki, which is a bell with a
direct connecton to the Nepalese occult. It is used to make a Sherpa
homemade brew, Jadnh, by ensuring fermentation.

The wood has several uses, including making wagon wheels for Gada, a
wagon pulled by oxen or water buffaloes. If this beautiful wood is strong
enough to be made into wagon wheels, it should be more than strong enough
for wooden knife handles.

This unusual redish wood makes the knives I have special and rare. It will
hold a special place in your collections.

Cool.

I loved the red Chandan wood they used to use.

I have a Foxy Folly that is Chandan and it is some beautiful red wood also:thumbup:

Dhar like wonderful stuff; I'll be eager to see some pictures.

However, that "sounds like Louisiana" description makes me want to start making Katrina jokes.....I think I'll refrain.

Dhar wood handle Tamang Knife is still looing for a nice home.

OMG:eek:

That is absolutely stunning! Love the color, love the finish on the blade, love the shape and angle.

Wonderfully gorgeous

Now those are good photos of tamangs! Mine were poor...

But I'm loving my tamang and nice to read about the handle! It was very comfortable chopping with gloves the other day.

I'd love to have one of the new Dhar handled Tamangs to partner for my Neem example.

That would be even more beautiful if it had some good ol' fashioned "Walosi Wood Chucking" done on it!!!!   :D

.

I'm thinking a Bonecutter with Dhar handles would be sweet. That's what I want. I'm so close to getting that tamang, it's not funny. Just gotta figure out how to fund that and a Bonecutter.

It arrived today and I love it. I applied a couple of coats of lemon oil to the handle, because the wood was a little dry. It's gorgeous wood. I cleaned the blade with WD40 and a rag. What a nice knife. It's quite lively. This should be a huge seller for HI. It's lighter than a regular Khukuri, but heavier and better handling than most hunting knives.
I can see chopping the heads off chickens, rabbits, squirrels and fish with this one.
The scabbard is also a thing of beauty.
Villager finish seems a perfect match for this knife. I sure am glad Auntie had the Kamis make these. Everyone here should get one.
