Excuse me gentlemen, but would any of you know where to get a good Thai or Burmese dha? I want it primarily as a wall hanger, but I want the genuine article, sharp and tough, as I think that they pay more respect to the real think. All help is greatly appreciated.

Hope that helps. HI is just starting to bring in some tarwars ( tulwar=india / tarwar=nepal )that look a bit like the dha. Check them out on the Himalayan Imports forum in the Maker's category of Bladeforums.

Thanks Rusty. Actually I got a great deal on a Bura made tarwar blem. It's the one on the HI site. Great sword, and I don't think that I would call it a blem. I'm not complaining though.

Chris - how big around is the tarwar handle and how heavy is it? My kora handle is bigger than a D cell maglite. Remember I'm 5'4" with size 8 shoes and probably gloves. The tarwar looks like it's handle could be taken down at least some in diameter even if you had to redo the two rivets. And what does it weigh? Does it feel quick or slow?

Sorry I can't give more links, but I left them on my old computer.

Hi Rusty! Don't you have a tarwar blem also? Like you I'm a bit on the teeny side compared to some of the other people that frequent bladeforums (case in point, the infamous knife destroyer Cliff Stamp). At 5'9" I am a little bit bigger than you though. However, I still find that my tarwar is a bit much for me. The handle isn't as big as a D cell Mag-lite but it is pretty big. You would probably want to sand it down a bit. Good news though is that the handle is long enough for a two handed grip. When I play with it it feels kind of slow. It is 2 1/4 lbs. I don't know if this is heavy for a sword or not as this is the first sword that I have owned. I also have not trained with blades, so please take that into account when reading this. The balance is superb however and I have no doubt that in a trained person's hands this sword would be a deadly weapon. What else would you expect from Bura? Anyways, I am curious as to how other swords handle. Maybe I should just stick khukuris. I already have one addiction and I don't know if my pocketbook can handle another one.

Chris

P.S. How heavy are dhas usually? They look a lot lighter and faster than my tarwar. Upon further reflection though I just realized that BirGorkha really overbuilds their khukuris. Maybe it is the same with their tarwars.

Khazar Kid,
the link to that Aranyik sword dealer is very interesting, haven´t seen Thai swords offered before. Do you have any experience with those swords? Are they more of the decorating piece type, or fully battleworthy (read: Sturdy handle construction, good blade)?
