I was wondering if anyone knew what exactly caused this spotting effect on my blade? It's happened a couple of times now. The steel is o1. I was using canola oil and oxy-acetylene to quench. Is my oil not fast enough or is it oxidation? Hopefully the pic shows up.

For some reason none of the urls like blade forums. Ugh. I dunno what I'm doing wrong but I can't get pictures to work here. I guess my questions wont get answered. Thanks any way. Now to figure out how to delete this thread because it is a waste now

If you use an image hosting site like Imgur it's pretty straight forward. You'll need to use the BBCode. I use Imgur and when you click on the image they give you a list of ways to share the photo. BBCode being one of them.

How are you trying to post a picture. You have to host the picture somewhere. I use drop box but I know others in the past used photo bucket. Don’t know if photo bucket still works for linking. You can also use Facebook if your crafty enough to extract a direct link to the image.

I use IMGUR. This is how I upload a photo here. Once you have an account set up, to upload a picture you click the button "New Post". Browse to your photo and click "Open". Then hover the cursor above your username and click "images" from the drop down menu. Click on the photo you want. On the right hand side of the screen there are a few different links, but click "Copy" on the bar that says "Direct Link" (2nd bar down from the top). Then on BladeForums click the "Image" icon and then right click and "paste" where it says "image URL".

Spotting is common with an unregulated heat source. Also, the torch has an oxidizing flame. The spots are decarb. Soak the blade in sodium bisulfate (Ph Down) for a couple hours, or even overnight. Wash clean and the rest of the spots should grind and sand off.
