I just picked up a a Gatco diamond hone system. Immediately I noticed that the holes in the grate clog up fairly quickly. Do I need to clean them out or is the slug what is doing the sharpening? If I should clean them out how, toothbrush hot water soap? Or do I leave it and work with it? Thanks for the help and input

Richard thanks. To be clear, I should keep them cleaned up while I am sharpening? Keep it unclogged while I work?

I just run it under a tap and use my fingers to scrub out the metal dust, clean it after every use, and if you're reprofiling, clean it whenever it is not cutting as aggressively.

A simple toothbrush does wonders up to Fine on my DMT's, but the XF responds well to the addition of toothpaste to the mix (rough on the eys though)...

Thank you very much gentlemen. I am re profiling, rather fixing a re-profile I started to do on my OutCast. As Roger999 suggested when it is not cutting aggressively I hit the hone with some warm water and toothbrush, a drop of dish soap really gets her clean. Pat dry oil, and back to work. This is going so much better than with the stones. The D2 steel was eating the stones up and it is apparent I allowed the coarse stone to wear to much before leveling it back out. Bad dumb, no down right stupid error. Making the edge a bit finer than I originally intended at 22 degrees instead of the 30 degrees I planned on but I think this will work fine. The Outcast should be able to chop hack all day and hold that edge just fine. We'll see, I'll post a review once I getter done. Thanks for the assist

I clean my diamond hones with a toothbrush and comet. They look and perform like new when I'm finished.

BreakFree is very effective at lifting those micro-particles from my DMT hones, just as it does on firearm barrels. I usually just wipe the hones off with a soft cloth after a sharpening session (I don't use water or any lube; dry works best), and once a month or so use the BreakFree.

I used an old toothbrush and a touch of dishsoap to clean my DMT Diamonds. Works like a charm.

I like the breakfree idea. Wonder if Hoppes Number 9 would work as well?
