Diamond Hones: Gatco VS DMT

Well, after about 9 years, my DMT flat steel seems to be wearing out. I'm sure it will still work as a ultra-fine hone, but I'd like to replace it.

I've seen Gatco diamond hones in the store and they look similar to my favorite DMT. Has anyone here had experience with both? I'd be quite pleased to simply have a new DMT, but if Gatco is better, I might try one.

Can someone give me a clue? THANKS!

I don't have any experience with the GATCO hones, but have replaced the stones on my Lansky (probably very similar) with the small DMT diamond hones and they run circles around the Lansky's diamonds. They seem to cut quicker and more uniform.

DMT- Can you use the DMT hones as you would the sharpmaker if you're able to freehand consistently.
Where would you find the DMT rods.
Thanks

DMT also makes a V-type sharpener similar to the Sharpmaker, except using 4 1/2" rods. Should be able to find one for about $40.

You could always lay a DMT benchstone, or tape a diafold to your sharpmaker if you can't hone freehand. I think you get more for your $$ with the sypdee 204 than with the dmt diamond rod setup. On another note guys, learn to sharpen freehand and finish up on a strop. You will never regret learning that skill.

DMT stones are warranted for life.

If yours seems to be worn out, contact the company for a replacement.

I don't have their contact info, but I'll try to find it & post it here.

EDIT:

Here is DMT's web address:

a word on diamond hones
A lot of people like them because they take off metal fast, but really they take it off too fast. Diamonds are too agressive for a knife blade. I would recommend a ceramic rod instead. Unless you are using your knife extremely hard all the time, you really wont get it so dull that you need diamonds to bring the edge back......BTW... I sharpen tools for a living. :)

I have the Gatco fine little hand hone thingy. It takes metal off, but the edge is very rough and coarse and doesnt cut stuff too well. A ceramic is much nicer unless you have a 1500 grit diamond stone maybe, or if you need to do a lot of reporfiling or taking chips out.

Thanks everyone.

I think I'll stick with DMT products. I need a quick way to an edge at work (where most of my knifing is done... we are actually issued a set of knives :)).

I've done nothing but freehand sharpening.

The 204 at home is something that's been on my want list. I do have 4" Spyderco Pro Files that do a great job on my smaller blades.

Please think about their double sided sharpening surface Duo-Sharp, probably coarse/fine. It looks much more cost efficient than two bench stones.
