Diamond Like Coating (DLC) HELP!

Hey all.....I just received a new knife today. It is the Blade-Tech Pro Hunter with the Carbon Fiber Handle & I opted for the DLC coated 1/2 serrated blade.

Problem: When I opened the blade, I noticed that towards the pivot, the blade had rubbed on the liner lock & put very small scratches on the coating turning them white. The only reason I chose the DLC coating is because it is supposed to be really tough. After seeing the marks on the blade, I don't think that I want that coating anymore.

I just don't know how well the DLC coating will hold up. Will it eventually rub off or what? Will it show off scuffs from cutting things? I really HATE the Benchmade & Spyderco knives with the BT type coating because it shows every little mark or scuff on the blade, but will the DLC do the same?

The were a few other minor things wrong with the knife & I am returning it 1st thing in the morning. I was told that they could put the regular Satin finished blade on there & make things better, but the DLC coating goes good with the knife & I am just confused.

Should I have them give me a new knife with another DLC coated blade or just stick with the Satin finish?

ANY help is greatly appreciated.

Yes, I did a search on DLC coatings, but it didn't give me the answers that I was looking for.

Thank you, Adam

Also, another question.....the Carbon FIber handle isn't as polished as I would like it to be. Is there anything that I could do about shinning it up any?

P-L-E-A-S-E any info that you can give me about the DLC coating before morning would help me out alot.

Thanks again all.

If there are scratches, I am sure that they will make it right. As for the coating, it is truly excellent. I know you don't want to do it with a new knife but take one of your other knives and just TRY scratching the DLC . . . won't work! You can even, though I don't suggest, rub it with sandpaper to no avail. (I have done that too) The coating is over a 90 rockwell and stands up to most anything. When a blade is done, you actually have to break through the coating on the edge to be able to sharpen it. It will not scratch in basic use and, with mine, not even with basic abuse. You may not "need" DLC but it is tougher than nails!! As if it were not abvious, I am a fan! :D

the white marks you see are likely not blemishes in the DLC but rather something else being rubbed off on it
like jason mentioned, dlc is one tough sonofabitch
i've cut open aluminium cans to make ashtrays, and the aluminium crazes the surface like mad
use it per normal for about a week and the scratches go away (probably rubbed off)

Thank you Jason Burns & DEA for the info.

I have the option of sending it back, but I hate having to do that. Especially since I was told that they looked the knife over before sending it. Yes, the things wrong with it are minor, but I paid over $200 for it & I expect the knife to be perfect. I have had a few other high dollar knives that I purchased new shipped to me with blades that were dull or a finish on the knife that looked unfinished....like they tried to rush to get it done.

I'm just tired of getting quality knives that aren't showing the quality.

I will be sending her back & I will go with the DLC coating again & see what happens. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP GUYS! :)

Any updates? I am considering getting one of these in DLC and want to know how it holds up.

Well, the coating is still on there, but in some spots, it is turning kinda white...like around the tip area where I do most of my cutting.
I thought that someone told me it would happen, but it is holding up so far.
The serrations on it are pretty crappy. They grap & tear....nothing like the king Spyderco serrations....but hey, it still works
Everything else about the knife is still good. I can't get over how good it feels in the hand & it is still relatively smooth in opening & closing. Probably needs a drop of oil to fix her up better, but all good.
I would recommend the knife to anyone :)

Thanks for the update. If I get one I want plain edge anyway. Never did care much for serrations.

It is my understanding that the white on the DLC is not a scratch or wear, it is where other materails are siomply "marking" on the finish but will come off. Does that sound right?

I think you may be talking about Tungsten DLC coating by BodyCote -

I have a Kershaw Black "boron" Leek - which turned out to be Tungsten DLC coated as opposed to Boron Carbide which used to be Kerhsaw's glossy black coating (like on the early "Black" Chives also shown in pic).

This knife is my at home EDC since May this year and it shows absolutely no signs of any scratching - although I do not use my knives very hard.

Vincent, Are you saying that Kershaw changed their Leek models to use Tungsten DLC as opposed to Black boron? So does that mean stores such as New graham that are selling the black boron are actually selling the Tungsten DLC?
