If it's monocrystalline diamond, which I believe the sharpmaker rods are, they should last longer than CBN as a general statement about their lifespan. For the purposes of knife sharpening CBN and synthetic polycrystalline diamonds can be considered generally equal. CBN will cut better longer than monocrystalline diamond.
Some manufacturers produce monocrystalline and polycrystalline diamond blends to capitalize on the strengths of both.
You just have to ask yourself, do you want maximum total life span or total maximum cutting efficiency?
(For coarse rods I'd personally choose the diamonds. For finer grits I'd choose CBN)
