Diamond paste question

Recently made a thread about a sharpening stone question and had the response to buy a strop.

So i've bought 3 strops and i'm planning on buying 3 diamond compounds, 2.5, 1 and .5 micron.

Al of those are in 5g syringes but i want to know how long you would do with that amount.

Thanks

I've been re-assured from some of the other stropping experts here, the syringes can last a VERY long time. I asked a similar question, not too long ago. The strop will get 'dirty' very quickly, from the metal removed from blades. Many are tempted to immediately clean them & re-apply compound. But, I've been told that isn't really necessary, so long as the compound embeds itself in the strop (& it will). Light (very light) application always works better, with stropping compound.

What is your finishing stone?

What brand diamond compound?

Use a very SMALL amount of the diamond paste on the strop. Rub it in gently, preferably with a rubber gloved finger, and allow to dry. A small syringe will last seemingly forever.

Duh Yea ! Don't know how that happened. Had some wine tonight with friends. Is that a good enough excuse?

With or without friends, wine is FINE! No excuses necessary. Been there, done that (I'm sure I will again). ;)

I am impressed with your stone holders, in particular the 'Sharpmaker' style mounted vertically. Very nice!

finishing stone will be a dmt extra fine 9 micron

brand is gloster tooling (ebay shop)
D05 30000 mesh <0.5 micron
D151 15000 mesh 1.5-1 micron
D2515 8000 mesh 2.5-1.5 micron

Might want to add a 6000 mesh compound, the jump from a 9 Micron hone to a 8k compound might be a little tough.

thanks, at the moment i'm out of money to spend but it will be my next purchase

Just thought if the xtra xtra fine dmt is 8000 mesh the jump wouldn't be to big. Thanks for the advise :)
