Diamond plate stone or grit progression

Hey guys been doing some reading and have some questions probably for Jason ,but anyone feel free to chime in .

I have the entire dmt lineup except the 120 micron plate . Rather than get the dmt 120 I believe I'll get the atoma 140.

I've read that the grits from the atomas to the dmts don't really match .

So i have dmt xc-eef or 220-8000.

If I got the atoma 140 can the dmt 220 remove the scratches or would I need the dmt xxc ?

I'm thinking I may need the 140 and then 400 atoma then jump to dmts ? Thoughts experiences? Or I thought maybe the 140 and 600 ? I'm thinking of buying one base and plate and just adding the pad and making it double sided .

9/10 if I'm using diamonds I just use the diamonds and go about my business . If a knife needs refined I'll usually use my shaptons . I have the pro 320 and glass 1k and 4k. Not sure if that helps but some people praise shaptons for their ability to remove scratches from low grit diamonds if the 320 could clean up the 140 I could be all set

It's not that different, the XXC and Atoma 140 are about the same when it comes to scratch pattern. I typically follow with the SG500 or DMT Coarse... SG220 if it's really hard steel.

Here's how I look at things. I translate whatever grit information I have into microns and assess it base on the micron size.

For example, DMT XXCoarse is 120 micron and DMT XCoarse is 60 microns. In my mind, that means I'll have to do at least two strokes (and I'm talking for relativity here) to replace the XXCoarse pattern with the XCoarse pattern. If I want to go from the XXCoarse to the Fine which is 25 micron, I need to do at least 5 strokes to replace the XXCoarse pattern.

In your specific example, I found this https://jendeindustries.wordpress.com/2011/09/25/dmt-vs-atoma-diamond-plates-for-the-edge-pro-a-microscopic-comparison/ link that says " the #140 Atoma is more closely related to the Extra-Extra Coarse (XXC) DMT, which is rated at 120 microns."

If that's the case, then no, you don't need the dmt XXC as they're approximately the same micron size (except for the diamond deposition pattern and maybe the diamond attributes themselves). And you should be able to use the XCoarse to override the Atoma 140 pattern. But this is just from my quick google research. I have the full line of DMT diamond myself.

ETA: It took me some time to create my post as Jason's post wasn't there yet when I started mine. I'm not trying to step on his toes; I was just taking the invitation for others to chime in.

Thanks Jason and Rey I had ran across some people saying the atomas leave a crazy scratch pattern some claimed the atoma 1200 pattern looked like a Dmt xc .

Another said to follow the atoma with the Dmt xxc . Even though the Dmt is rated at 120 and atoma at 140 I read the diamond patterns made all the difference and the scratch patterns were a lot coarser for a rated grit as in an atoma 140 made a lot deeper scratches than the 120 because of the diamond pattern .

I appreciate it , had I had just a question for Jason I would of pmed him. Not saying I don't trust his or your opinion either .

No worries Rey, it's always good to have different points of reference.

Regardless the Atoma 140 is the best value in that range. I guess it depends on your goals but going from diamond to diamond, in regards to scratch pattern, is counter productive in my mind. Your just making more work for yourself going from Atoma to DMT whatever. Completely different animals, scratch patterns and results. Plus there is so much metal waste.

I find it hard to believe a scratch pattern from an Atoma 1200 looks anything like a DMT XC pattern. I imagine that would depend on which XC plate / product was being discussed. What I see off my 600 Atoma is nothing like any of the old DMT stuff I still have hanging around. Possibly a fresh and new Atoma compared to a well used DMT could produce something like that.

But if it works for you and your happy with the results then more power to ya.
