Diamond rods for sharpmaker question

How have the diamond hones for the sharpmaker been working for people??

I seem to remember that some people were wearing the diamond grit off of the rods when they first came out, has that been corrected? Even though Spyderco was covering it under warranty, I still don't want the hassle of having to return them.

I definately need a coarser stone, if there are still problems with diamond rods, I may get a dmt stone and try laying it against the grey stones to get the proper angle. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks

Dcon67,

The Diamond rods for mine have held up fine. I think people sometimes have trouble knocking the grit off not wearing it off there is a difference. The rods are designed to be used as such: lay the blade on them and let it go down them without added pressure other than the weight of the blades and what it takes to hold the blade in position, basically not much pressure at all. Most of the people I have seen have problems with knocking the grit off is because they "grind" the blade down the rod or just use too much pressure and they are not designed for this. I think it comes from impatience just wanting to get it done too fast. If you let the rods do the work the way they are designed I believe you will have a long time of good service out of them, I have so far.

We've only received one pair back for wear. Inspection and testing revealed that the diamonds had capped and were not as aggressive as new, but they were still there and working more aggressively than the gray stones. I'll be testing them myself more over the next few days as I can. So far, if used gently, they seem to work well. I have replaced my own gray ceramic stones with diamonds. I go from the diamonds to the white ceramic stones when sharpening. I also use them quite a bit for profiling thin edges. So far, so good.

Are the diamond rods for the sharpmaker monocrystalline diamond like the DMT hones?

I have always had good luck with the DMT diamonds and if the spyderco rods are the same type I may just have to get a pair :)

From what I have read the spyderco diamond rods are 400 grit, correct?
Will spyderco be making them in differant grits later on?

Thanks,

When properly used, they work well and hold up just fine. I no longer use or carry the gray stones. The diamond triangles are 400 mesh which is coarse enough to remove metal effectively but no so course as to need "clean up".

Be gentle with them. Do not press the knife against the stones hard. It is possible to dislodge the diamonds I have heard. But with nice easy strokes they cut steel like gang busters. You can reprofile a knife with much less effort. I have used mine extensively. No need anymore for the gray stones. I clean the dust them off with a dry old tooth brush. No water etc for cleaning them.
