Diamond rods for the sharpmaker

What is the best way to clean the diamond rods for the Sharpmaker? I just got a pair in the mail today and have been grinding the crap out of my one knife. Up to at least 150 strokes per side and it's still not at the edge. This thing must have been at a 70-80 degree angle easy. Unreal. So, because of all the metal I"m removing to re-edge it, I'm sure I'm gunking up the rods. I don't want to scotch-brite them, as I could see that being bad. Suggestions? thnx

I just used water and my hands. Seemed to work pretty well.

Yeah, it takes a long time with the sharpmaker. Keep at it. :)

I use a toothbrush and soap.

Remember, you're also not supposed to put too much pressure on the rods since "Excess pressure can loosen diamonds from their bonding agent." (Quote from a post made by Sal Glesser in the Spyderco forum). I think that may be what I did since my diamond rods don't seem too aggressive nowadays.

Is it worth getting those diamond rods? The only knives I can CONSISTENTLY put a fine edge on with a Sharpmaker are - Spydercos. ;)

Should I buy the diamond rods to reprofile the rest?

They sure make things go faster. I originally got mine to do my wifes kitchen knives that are pretty bad dull when I get to them. I've used them on a couple of others and to do the 30 degree back bevel that is recommended.

Micmurry: Long time is right. I have an EdgePro that I use to rebevel most of my knives if I need to. I just want to see how long it takes to go from an extreme edge angle to the 40degree setting on the Sharpmaker. I have another 60 strokes per side and still not there.

Zenghost: Yup. I'm going gently on them. I can think of better ways to blow $50+ than pressing too hard. They include a warning-type sheet now that cautions against too much pressure.

Cockroachfarm: I use it on my Benchmades as I own no Spyderco Knives. :) It put a great edge on them. It depends on the angle the factory started with. With my Benchmade 835HS, which is M2, the factory angle was 30degrees so it works perfectly with very little work. My ascent is at 40 degrees now too.

You can slim the edge down much faster with a large coarse benchstone which is much cheaper than the Spyderco rods.

Thanks, good advice. (But then I can't buy those diamond rods! :( )
