Joyce/Sal,
The following quote was recently posted in another forum:
...According to Sal Glesser, diamond coated rods will be available in the fall...
Did I somehow miss the announcement or is this wishful thinking? TIA.

It is very possible that I'm the one who misspoke, so to speak. My memory is terrible.

I did clearly remember Sal saying the diamond coated rods would be made by September. I did not remember that he said they would be tested and wouldn't be on the market until 2002.

I know I posted at least once, maybe 2-3 times that they'd be available in the fall. My apologies to anyone I missled. I think I even advised one person to wait a month or two to buy the 204 with the diamond sleeves. That is what I've been waiting for.

Mea Culpa, many times.

We will have the steel triangle in mid SEP. Then we have to test diamond plating until we're pleased. The 2002 catalog is scheduled to have the diamond triangles as an accessory to the 204. I have personally replaced the gray (brown) ceramic stones in my personal 204 with the diamond triangle prototypes.

Sal, do you mean that the "old" grey stones will be almost dispensible?

That is interesting...what Sal said about replacing his grey stones w/ the diamond ones. I thought that the Diamond stones would be used only for complete reprofiling, and that then one would still finish the sharpening process w/ the grey then white stones.

I'd LOVE to get another set to replace my OLD ones!! After 12 years or so they are still holding up well though!

Sal,

I recall a while back that someone posted the Website for the company that does BC coating (Black Diamond; I think).

One of the uses that they highlighted for the BC Coating was for diamond coated cutting tools. They claimed that the BC Coating helped to hold the diamonds in place so that they were not knocked off.

I know that it would add cost but it might be worth investigating.

Hi General. No prices yet.

SDouglas. I'd like to see if we can put on the diamonds on right rather than look for an alternate at this time.

The argument for CBN over Diamond is one similar to the galling issue for steels. If you have to cut steels with a high Cr content D2 is not a good choice because even though it has a high wear resistance, the high Cr content will cause galling. Diamond is just carbon, and even though it is much harder than steels, because they contain carbon, when they are abraded the carbon in the steel can break up the Diamond by an action similar to galling. CBN doesn't have the same problem and thus is supposed to last much longer on steel knives.

The CATRA group use CBN over Diamond for this reason, you might want to drop them a line and see if you can get some hard experimental info.

Sal,

I got the impression from the Website that the BC Coating stabilized the diamonds on the Steel. It doesn't replace them.

Hi Cliff. I've been to CATRA several times. Spyderco has a CATRA edge tester (one of 19) that is in constant use as we are always testing.

I've used the CBN wheels at CATRA (they are used under power) and was not very impresssed with the edge it produced. used manually, the CBN did not cut nearly as well as diamonds, IMO.

SDouglas. I believe that diamonds can be put on so they stay. If I am not satisfied with the results, then I will consider a coating for added strength. But in the interest of keeping the cost down (the diamond plating process is expensive), we would use an additional coating only if necessary.
