What grit(s) of a diamond sharpener would you use on your RAT knife?

I usually sharpen with sharpmaker and want to try diamond stone, so I am not sure which grit(s) to buy.

Thanks!

are you wanting a diamond for maintenance, repair sharpening/reprofiling/toothy?
if maintenance, get a 600/1200 grit combo. (fine/xfine)
for repair/reprofile/toothy, go with 300/600 (med/fine)

if you want a mirror polish, pick up one of the xxfine stones (finer grit than most ceramic stones)

personally, I have a diafold fine/xfine pocket stone as part of my edc.

Thank you Vik.

I think repair sharpening is what I need mostly, so it looks like 300/600 according to your scale.

that was for a dual grit stone -- you can get just the 300 grit, which will remove stock pretty quck, but leave you with a fairly rough edge.
the 600 grit stone will still leave plenty of "tooth", but not be as rough.

the other trick with diamonds - they seem to get "finer" with age and you don't need to use much pressure with them to get good results.

you should be able to find a dual grit folding diamond stone at any home store or sporting goods store for a reasonable price.
you can also check out online camping and woodworking catalogs for the "credit card" style diamond sharpeners, which will fit into an altoids tin if you're looking for smaller/lighter.
I've used both and prefer the folding ones for safety - they give you a way to hold on without being in immediate danger of removing a fingertip.

Good advice, I'll add to look at the diafolds, c/f and xf/xxf would cover everything from repair to putting a razor sharp edge on your blade with very little effort.

I like the tiny ezlapp diamond hook sharpener that looks like half a pen with the rod inside, all you need for field touch ups and the pen clip keeps it where you want it.

Do they come in different grits? If so which one is more "universal"?

i'd go with dmt dia sharp 8" Coarse (325) fine (600) extra fine (1200) and extra extra fine (8000)

i'm saving up to buy them for learning how to sharpen freehand :D

I have been using a Sharpmaker for years and decided to try the Diafold, plus I needed something to put in my kit.
I ordered both from Amazon yesterday. Amazons description for the X Fine/XX Fine is not correct, just make sure the # is DMT FWEEE if you order one for yourself. The Fine/Coarse # is DMT FWFC
You can find them a little bit cheaper at other sites, but I have had good luck with Amazon and the shipping is free on these right now.
