Diamond sharpmaker rods

The small, dark areas at the end of the rods are where you insert them into the sharpmaker. They are not coated with diamonds, so as not to tear the hell out of your base, so they look a little different than the rest of the rod.

I haven't tried the actual diamond rods, but if they're anything like the diamond "speed sleeves" I got in the 90's, they'll make your sharpmaker a lot more useful. Mine have been worn almost smooth over the years, but I can still use 'em to touch up edges that need a bit of toothiness.

I just ordered a set. Some of the knives I have are so beat (or neglected by the prior owner) that I think it will really help. Word is they cut absurdly fast, so be careful. Something like ten strokes a side or less.

That's nice to hear about their diamond rods and would expect nothing less from any diamond sharpener. How I see it, nothing else saves you more time like diamonds.

True, but remember that they are going to give you the roughest edge. Ceramics and stropping can give you and edge that diamonds won't. There's a reason why you can't finish a straight razor on diamonds.

Anyone know where the Spyderco diamond sharpmaker rods would fit in on the DMT range of x-coarse, coarse, fine, extra fine, etc. ?

I believe they are a 400 grit (like Eze-Lap medium) so they would fall between DMT Fine (600) and Coarse (325).

I thought they were course, something like 400 grit if I'm not mistaken.

.:edit:. Blues beat me too it. :)

After using them for a couple months, in my experience they don't cut very fast at all. Compared to the medium brown ceramics, yeah, but not as fast as I'd like. For my reprofiling and dull as dirt stuff I'm moving to a DMT 6"x2" extra-coarse Dia-Sharp leaned up against the rods.

The diamond rods are nice however to start the sharpening process with if you've let your edge slack a bit. Just like Josh said, 10 or so swipes per side on the corners, repeat on flats, then progress normally through the other rods.
