Just thinking about buying a diamond rod sharpmaker in the UK but I remember reading a post where someone said they wore quickly. Do you have these and for everyday use do they wear?
I never had the diamond rods for the SM (I never liked the sharpmaker really), but I do have experience with a variety of diamond stones. They will wear quickly if you use too much pressure; keep the pressure down and the diamonds will last a long time and you will raise a smaller burr.
If you use a lot of pressure, you will tear the diamonds out of its matrix. If you use just the weight of the knife, your rods should last just about as long as you do. I have an old DMT V-sharpener from 30 years ago that still works well. I prefer the rods on my Sharpmaker as they are twice as long, but both work equally well.
I own and use Spyderco Diamond rods. The above posted info on using less pressure and more passes across the rods is sound advice. I would/will buy them again if I wear out my current set.
Get a DMT Aligner kit. For not much more money you get a guided system with a basic kit of 3 grit sizes coarse(320), fine(600), and extra fine(1200). You can upgrade with extra coarse(220) and extra, extra fine(8000). If you need even faster metal removal, you can get the infamous extra, extra coarse at 120 grit.
