why do a lot of these sharpeners have blank areas though out the sharpening area

I have a DMT sharpener, is it to reduce the price of the item by using less diamonds.

if you sharpen a plane blade on one of these sharpeners some parts of the blade will be sharpened more than other areas.

why o why.

regards.

John.

the holes in the dmt sharpeners are there to let the metal you take off your knife while sharpening it to have a place to go. it helps keep the sharpener working better and from becoming "loaded".

if you sharpen a plain blade you have some areas in constant contact with diamonds and other parts that only have 50% contact when you use the full lenth of the sharpener.

unless you repostition the blade for the next run.

I think it`s just a matter of money.

have you seen the size of the areas without diamonds on the cheap
sharpners.

I found this on the DMT website.

http://www.dmtsharp.com/general/surfaces.htm

but it must cause the blade or item sharpened to be irregular.

The origional promotion was to reduce clogging, there was request for a continuous surface so most make both.

Yes, however most knives are drawn across the stone so it isn't a concern with general cutlery.

Nice, I haven't checked out the DMTwebsite in a while. As I haven't needed to buy a new sharpener. (I have four DMT's including the largest double sided one) But it is nice to see new products from them. they are correct in the the fact that the point can become an issue on smaller blades getting hung up on the stone when you get to the tip of the knife. They are not an issue once you get used to them that much though. Later, Jeff
