Diamond stone flattening - how to?

Okay, while I already have a rough idea / understanding how to flatten my Venex Centaur diamond stones for my Hapstone R2 sharpener I dare to ask for some more detailed explanation about that topic:

What I understand is that such stones will be flattened with a powder on a plate! My questions now:
- What type of powder should I use? Silicon Carbide?
- What powder grit(s) do I need, considering my Venev stones have the following (FEPA) grits: 80, 150, 240, 400, 800, 1200
- What type of plate do I need for the flattening? Steel, glass or something else? Are there any special requirements for the plate considering hardness, flatness and size?
- How do you then do the flattening, means how to mix the powder, how much of the powder, and so on?

Sorry when this are really basic questions, but I never did something like this until now.

For a plate you can use a flat piece of granite or a piece of float glass. Doesn't have to be very big for these stones.

As far as which grits to use, the only real rule is that you always want to use a courser grit than the stone you're lapping. Gritomatic sells a kit with a whole range of sic grits, which is a pretty good deal. Or you could buy individual grits for about $5 apiece. Of the grits they sell, I'd use F60 for the 80 and 150 stones, 120 for the 240 and 400, and 220 for the 800 and 1200. It's not critical, as long as you're courser than the sharpening stone, because the stones will revert to their native surface before long anyway.

For the actual process, I use maybe 1/2 a teaspoon to a teaspoon. Springle it in the middle of the plate and drizzle some water on it. Then it's just a matter of making figure-eights with the stones for a few minutes. Before you start, draw a grid pattern on the stones with a pencil and periodically check to see if all the pencil has been removed. When it's gone I generally reapply the pencil and do a few more figure-eights just to make sure it's been abraded away and not just washed off by the water.

I use an 80 grit sic stone to lap and refresh my venev stones. I have used sic powder many times before and I still have some. The stone in my.opinion is much easier as I've used both.

Bill3152, what is grit range of your Venev's?
Anyone use sharpeningsupplies double-time two sided flattening stone?
Watched all of Diemaker's flattening video's and found them valuable.

I have same but 1st gen. I use loose 80 grit, so stone would be cleaner, it will be an experiment. thx
