I know that DMT diamond stones may be the best or at least the best known. How do Lansky, EZELAP and Smith's stones compare? The Lansky seems to be the best buy but I would like to hear from folks with hands on experiance with the different brands.

I have a set of the Smith's diamond stones and they seem to be holding up very well. I have used them solid for three years and they still remove steel like a dream. The only draw back is their not made in the USA.

I went with EZELAP because the price was better than DMT, I liked the full coverage of the "stones" compared to the DMT's hole pattern, and I liked their salesman Art. That was decades ago and I am still happy. The stones see occasional heavy use and are holding up well. I had one that developed a rust patch on the face within the first year, EZELAP traded it for a new one, no problem.

I had the Lansky diamond stones in all available grits. They went smooth on me after sharpening just a few knives, no super steel either, I'm talking VG-10, AUS-8, 1095 here. I bought them on a clearance sale at a big sport store that has since gone under. I didn't loose much money on the investment, but would advise anyone to steer clear of them.

Does anyone know where to get a complete set of DMT diamond stones with the base.A goood price for tha & possibly a link ?
Also, what grits are going to be best for keeping a good custom blade maintained sharp
Thanks in advance,
-Vince

DMT and Norton diamond hones are the best, IMO. Surprisingly, the uber-cheap diamond plates sold at Harbor Freight ain't bad, holding up much better than EZE-Lap in my experience.

It is possible that the stones are ruined. I would try scouring the stones with an abrasive cleaner like ajax or bar keepers friend. Modern steels (S30V, D2, M2, ZDP189) they tend to leave fine filings, but older SOFTER steels like AUS-8 especially will clog the diamonds up and make the stone useless.

dmt 8" blue for quickly removeing steel, follow with sharpmaker to finish. saves alot of time, and money.

Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a try and see what happens. I've since moved on to the Spydie Sharpmaker and belt sander so the Lansky does not get used much nowadays.

Btw, I have two Duo Sharp 10" DMT stones. One Red/Blue Fine/Course combo. As well as one Green/Blue Extra Fine/Course combo. Work great.
