I read jailhack post.I have a first blade that i forged out of o1.doing my grind on seem to be real good, but when i got down to the end, where it is ready to heat treat,i notices a slight dip inthe middle of the blade, help.what did i do wrong.. royboy

Roy,
smooth even stroaks, every jiggle, shake or bump will be seen in the grind.

take it back to the grinder and try again. it should come right out:D

Make sure the wheels on your grinder are running smooth.
Slower is better! Good belts help also. NO clicks

Sounds like a dreaded 2 incher to me,That is what I call those divites I get when I bump the blade on the wrong side of teh Platen when I set the plunge lines. The only way to correct this is to start a little ahead of the plunge line and hold the blade at a different angle thus not letting the platten dig back into the groove,I have found that if I don't change the angle of the grind I don't ever get those divites out.You will just keep exagerating teh dig in if you don't correct the problem, they happen to the best of use so don't feel alone.Try changing the angle of the Blade like pointing the blade down towards the floor alittle more than normal..

roy i dont even do hollow grinds but one thing i have learned is to clean the contact wheels with acetone, stuff builds up and they get bumpy. my grinders always run a noticeable amout smoother and quieter after i wipe them down.

thanks for your advice.I dont have a variable speed, and do feel that i am runnto fast.when grinding your bevels,,after your punge cut, is best to work from in front of punge to more to thin it down.or am i not clear on what i am talking about.any help would be great,if you like to show me,let me know.. royboy.

let me make a note first. I was taught to grind molding profile knives for shapers and molders on a high speed bench grinder. I come at this a little differently than most. Also what works on a 1 inch stone may not work in a 2 inch belt, but I'm hopeing it's symilar enough to help.

by plunge cut I assunme you are making a heavy cut to start and then cleaning it up. that should work, that's how I do my flat grinds.

when I hollow grind I go gently from the start. If I know the angle I want. I hold it on the stone and try to keep it steady and true from the beginning. I will adjust it a little to make sure the hollow is where I want it. I will grind the entire side from ricasso to tip in one flowing motion, and then back again untill it gets to hot to hold. After cooling I check it to see how it's coming the back on the grinder. As I grind I am constantly trueing and cleaning the stones. ( from the other notes on the thread. you have to do that on your 2 in belt also) but even after geinding fo 20 years, and taking my time and going slow I found myself regrinding a blade today after the handle was on, (sigh)

I hope this helps, Eric
