Has anyone here had good results with dico white or green compound? I don't much care for stropping because I like more of a toothy edge that pops hair but my friend is all about stropping and seen our local store had some but couldnt find any good info on it. So what do ya say?

I'm not familiar with Dico white, but they make a pale grey that is a fine AlumOx. It works very well but is pretty fine, in line with Ryobi white. If looking for toothy, they make an excellent black compound that is a larger abrasive. I don't have the part #s in front of me but can get them tomorrow.

I have never used their green, but from speaking to one of their sales reps they consider it to be of the highest quality and size distribution. IIRC they discontinued manufacturing the green CrO a couple years ago (maybe not, that's what the sales rep told me) so what's out might be all that's left. I'd certainly take a chance on it if not ridiculously priced. Is made in house and their light grey and black are plenty good.

Well I can't seem to figure out how to upload a picture but the white says wr1 in big letters and below it says 7100960 the green says grn 7100970. They were only 5 bucks a pop so he got them. Do any of those sound like the good ones?

At that price I'd try em and find out. The ones I have are "E5" Emery and "SCR" for stainless.

The E5 is about 20 micron, I haven't broken down the SCR but I'd guess it runs from 3 to 1 micron.

Presumably the SCR is going to be a bit less refined than the white which will be approx 1-.5 micron depending, assuming it is anything like other mfgs lineups. The abrasive for both is Aluminum Oxide, I definitely recall the sales rep stating the green was Chromium Oxide.

Thank you for the information heavyhanded. Would it be worth buying the other greens they have on hand as long with some black and gold colored stuff?

I'd just buy what you need, a single stick will last a lifetime. If the price is good, I'd try one of whatever they have.

So I went out myself and bought some e5 some white and some green along with some balsa. Made 3 strops with it and flat 1/4 inch aluminum plate for a backing. Sanded them flat and applied all the compounds. I was surprised at how well it worked. The e5 left a pretty dang toothy bite and I ran an aus8 sog over the white and green and man that thing is flinging hair off your arm with the slightest pressure. I still don't know if it is quite needed for me but it sure is fun lol

Back when the Washboard was still in the protoype/proof of concept stage I used some of the Dico E5 and a sheet of paper to sharpen one of the MinL's smaller vintage sabatiers. It was butterknife dull, light throwing back heel to tip and legitimate rounding of the apex, not just rolled. Make a wicked toothy edge - great for a utility edge. I used the Dico SCR (IIRC) in a series with the E5 on the full size Chef's pattern - turned out nice and polished up with a narrow, well-formed V bevel.

Not the fastest, but as a proof of concept was a success and the Dico really impressed me. Years ago we used to use the E5 at work to polish silica and fused polyester off of the photoconductive drums in the digital presses.
