So posted a poll along with this. I don’t post much but, though I’d maybe get some extra opinions on this. Let me know what you think. Here is the deal. I got a brand new hidden canyon hunter a week ago. It had/has a gray handle and came with what appeared to be a nice kydex sheath. Awesome knife perfect for a deer knife. Anyway on Monday we had a nice snow here in MO about 6-7 inches worth and I went out tracking deer in it with my crossbow. Before I went out I slid my knife onto my belt. I walked over 10 miles that day and never could get close enough to tag one. When I got back to the truck it was dark. I pulled off my wet snowy jacket, and tossed my bow in the back. Then I reached down to slide off my knife and all that was left was the leather piece that held the kydex to your belt. The screws/rivets had come completely apart dropping my knife somewhere in the woods. The sheath completely failed. The next day I contact bench made and the best they would do was offer a 50% off promo code that expires at the end of the month. Now I figure that their warranty covers manufacturing defects and a sheath coming apart (not breaking or tearing mind you just falling apart) is a manufacturing defect. As a sheath is designed to hold the knife it seems to me that bench made should have sent me a new one. That said I am clearly biased so I wanted to know what you gents think. I’ll likely get another one but, I may hesitate to by further Benchmade products after that. What day you guys?

P.S. if anyone from Missouri is hunting at the Pacific Palisades and comes across my knife please pm me. I would be truly grateful

Jake

Unfortunately I think they did. Even the best warranties typically dont cover loss. There are so many variables and they don't know you personally. I get what you're saying about a defect resulting in the issue but look at things from their point of view. There are alot of people with no real integrity who try to take advantage of people and companies whenever possible. Im not implying you are one of them but Im sure you have seen these types before. If they replace your knife now they have set a precident that they will replace the knife of anyone who can show them a damaged sheath. It becomes a slippery slope on there part. Hope this helps and I hope your knife is found and returned.

I would counteroffer. I imagine that promo code only works on their site, so you'd only be getting 50% off of full-blown MSRP. Benchmade charges $50 for their sheathes... Being that you still have a sheath, ask them to pull $50 off of a new knife, and allow the 50% discount to be used on the remainder for them to send you just the knife without a sheath.

cypress-there is no sheath. All that was left was the leather belt loop.

just so you guys know I am not bashing. My EDC is a 590 boost and will continue to be. I am a paramedic and it is very handy when used to discreetly cut seat belts one handed while assessing a pt. It also covers all of my daily knife uses and locks up nice and tight. I have carried it 2 years now I think.

Ohhh I see now. I'd still ask for more of a discount, but that's just me. The knife was a week old, and I'd imagine the sheath carries the same warranty that the knife has.

They wouldn’t budge. 50% coupon would be best they could do per CS. Basically I paid 125 for it and then another 90 with s&h through Benchmade’s site. 215 into the blade so I paid almost double regardless of coupons. I see the point about anyone could say they lost it which makes sense but, it still leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Company has good products and fair price for what you get but, still when all you have to show for your hard earned cash is a little leather strap it stings.

I always go over my gear before using it to make sure something like this won't happen. You should have put Loctite on the screws before carrying the knife. I do this with all of my Tek-Loks, and prefer pull-the-dot snaps on leather. Sorry for your loss.

Yeah I will do that In the future with any sort of kydex. Truth is I’ve never owned a kydex sheath before so it never occurred to me. My hunting knives have always been in a leather sheath before now and I actually got a replacement with a leather one so it’s all stitched no screws.

even though it was new
they should have been tightened and loctite applied
sorry for your loss

Personally I dont loctite my sheaths because I dont know how the end user will configure it. If it comes with threadlocker it can be a pain to re configure. I usually recommend that the end user applies loc tite once they are happy with the setup.

Man that’s a bummer.

Is there literature or any instruction provided that recommends loctite? If not, I’d personally be disappointed.

My opinion is it should come out of box ready to work unless there is directions indicating some set up before normal use.

Hope you find it.

Also, thanks for posting this information. This info will be helpful for current and future owners to keep a tab on the sheath.

Yeah thats too bad.

You have to see it from their point of view. If they offered replacements for that, everybody would be dropping their knives in the snow lol

just don’t forget to look at it in their eyes for all they know it might not have happened, no offense or disrespect at all. Just saying imagine if half customers called and asked for replacement for loosing stuff

As a deer hunter on public lands myself, I have to ask how you managed to hike 10 miles in a 1sq mi postage stamp sized lot of public land- https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Palisades_Conservation_Area

That sucks about the knife though. Perhaps next time keep it safety tucked into your pack until needed. I remember one hunt out here in Colorado in the oak brush where I managed to loose a map and jacket. Shrubbery has a way of making a hunt a strip tease and lightening ones load in a bad way.

Ive looked at that blade before, seems like a well designed knife.

Simple answer - keep moving. Steps add up... walking the perimeter of a 1 square mile "postage stamp" one time would be 4 miles. Heck, I could walk 10 miles in my fenced in back yard, if I was of a mind to do so.

I would say no and it would sour me in decision making for the future. It was a defective sheath that should have been checked prior to you buying an expensive knife by the company who sold it to you. While loctite is nice most of the general public is not going to go through all that when they purchase a Benchmade nor should they.
