curious

Did Buck ever make a REAL cocobolo solid wood fixed blade? ( not the dymalux birchwood laminate colored to look like cocobolo).

A real quick search shows a 103, I believe a 118, and a 120 on the bay that are stated as being cocobolo. I'm sure there are others.

NO
edit... could not find any fixed blades but it looks like there was a 110 and 112 BOTM that were solid.

Stated on eBull :^))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Must be divine truth :^D

One of the knives has a COA from Buck saying the handle is real cocobolo. I think I'm going to believe BUCK / COA. My understanding is (yes, I could be completely wrong) the "dymalux" / Dymondwood is made of resin / laminated wood that is not natural cocobolo / ebony / etc.

I've personally never seen a Buck fixed blade with a real cocobolo handle. If one has been made, I'd sure like to see it. :)

Buck has made some folders with real cocobolo handles. The 110 and 112 from the BotM program were out of this world.

.to me its disappointment of sorts..was building a nice collection of Buck “ Cocobolo“ knives only to now have a nice collection of birch laminate knives colored to look like cocobolo. Its a let down….they are not that very special to me anymore, just a bunch of pretty birchwood laminate knives.

Yes I know it states cocobolo Dymondwood…..but should have this also in info…
* Dymondwood Birch laminate Handles, Cocobolo wood stain. Not actual Cocobolo wood.

Guess I am taking off that plaque , ha, should read BUCK laminated birchwood series

I agree.
Sometimes their handle names can be misleading.

A few years back they sold a Heritage Walnut 110..... boy was I disappointed.
I returned it. Buying it made me feel foolish.

They got me with a “walnut” 110 years ago, before I knew better. I sold it out of disappointment when I found out, lol.

Meant to say oak, not walnut.

It's my understanding that the Custom Shop option is true walnut.

Awhile back they sold a 110 with "Heritage Walnut" that proved to be just walnut stain on a laminated handle. They obviously misled a few of us with that.

Is the walnut option in the custom shop not walnut?

That was a brain fart on my part. It’s was oak, not walnut. It was a copper and clad exclusive.

Mine was one of those "limited weblasts" they used to do.
I was hoping for walnut scales and got laminate instead.

It was a nice knife.
But not at all what I wanted.

Those were nice if you grabbed one of the 5160 blades.
It's funny, I got one of those myself, hated the oak stained laminate handle and gave it away.

Gotcha, thanks. I don’t think I’d be happy with that situation either!

Yep, 5160. :)

Loved the steel, hated the plywood look of the scales when looking at the top and bottom of the handle. It made me feel even more stupid because I bought it kind of in honor of my great grandfather who carried a Buck 110 for a large part of his life, and hated composite materials. It was pretty deflating. :/

I almost wish I would have kept it around so I could have some new scales made. I really enjoy Buck’s 5160, and would love to see more carbon steel on the 110 and 112. 52100 would be so cool.

Y Your Name Goes Here PM me the link to the one with the COA

As others seems interested I'll post an image of the COA here. Do a search for "buck cocobolo". The knife in question is at the top of the list of 13 results.

I'm going by the COA, which says, "The knife features a Cocobolo handle . . . ". It does not say Cocobolo Dymalux or Dymondwood. If this is not a real cocobolo handle then, in my opinion, Buck is being deceptive with their description of the materials used when selling knives like this limited edition knife (edition of 31). I've seen Buck describe handles which are not real cocobolo as "Cocobolo Dymondwood". So, I'm assuming, if this is not real cocobolo it would say "Cocobolo Dymondwood" in the COA. But, from reading this thread, I guess Buck doesn't always do that.

If this practice is ongoing, with the above mentioned previous offerings of Heritage Walnut or previous oak offers, then Buck is purposefully misleading their customers. At a minimum there should be an asterisk next to the brand names of Dymalux or Dymondwood stating not real ebony/oak/cocobolo etc. In my opinion.

I'm assuming a lot of customers would want to know this information (and want their money back) and would feel similarly "disappointment/misleading/foolish/pretty deflating".

I'd be pissed if I had a collection of cocobolo handles I found out to be laminated birch wood, colored to look like cocobolo. Send it back !
