Did Buck phase out ATS-34 in favor of 154CM on the CSAR-T 95BKSTP-B model?

A few days ago, I ordered a Buck/TOPS CSAR-T folder (model 95BKSTP-B, Buck part number 3362) that was advertised by an online dealer as having an ATS-34 steel blade. However, upon arrival, I found that the blade was marked 154CM instead, although the part number and model number on the box match the website. From time to time, I've read that ATS-34 has been surpassed by superior steels in recent years, and was curious how 154CM compares to it, and if Buck changed the steel on this CSAR-T model without changing the model/part number. I have only one ATS-34 knife that I can think of (EDI Genesis folder) and a few with 154CM, but any comparison would be apples to oranges because the CSAR-T is a much "beefier" knife than the others. (I'm aware that there is also a less expensive model with 420HC steel instead, with different grip material.)

Anyone know the scoop?

I would call ATS-34 a look-a-like to 154cm. As the ingredients are very close. However, ATS-34 is a Japanese Hitachi made steel, a good steel back in the 80's. Back then there were some problems with the American made version 154cm. So, custom knife makers went to ATS-34. Later they listened and the mfg. process was changed. Now, 154cm is made using the double vaccum, re-melt process and the product is much cleaner than the Hitachi product. This alone is a step up. As for noticing this difference after grinding and heat treating a knife, I'd say only maybe. Because much is held in the blades ability to cut in the blade and edge profile as well as heat treat. (sharpening and edge retention) But for the better mfg. alone I'd choose 154cm. DM

IIRC that model was ATS-34 for the first year of production then Buck switched steels. Some retailers don't update their websites very often.

Thanks for all the info. I'm really digging this knife either way, but wanted to make sure I got what I paid for.
