Did Buck Use Convex Edge Grinds in the 1970s??

I just bought a pre-1980 #102 Woodsman that was unused and unsharpened. The edge is basically convex, as far as I can tell. Perhaps it was sharpened on a slack belt? In any case, I'm curious whether that is typical of Buck knives from this era? I have a couple of other 1960s/1970s Bucks that I purchased new but I've sharpened them over the years so they don't tell me much about the original edge. Thanks for any info -

John

John, Yes most all Buck's were convex in the 60's, 70's and 1980 and 81 . Then in 82 normally about the time of the 4 dots Buck began to fully hollow grind their blades . Then in mid 90's they began experimenting with a thinner edge what later became their edge 2000 . The thicker edge could take more abuse but the thinner cut better . DM

Thanks!!! I wasn't sure I was really judging the edge correctly. I've now got several convex edges (early Moran FB01, Fallkniven F1, plus the three Bucks - 110, 120 and now 102). I think it's time to learn how to sharpen a convex edge properly and maybe re-convex the 120 and 110. :D Paul Bos is the boss and he does great things with everything he touches, but I still like those old 440C blades.

I'm just thinking that this may be news to a lot of the younger folks here.

Those who have links to sites with pictures explaining the various edges and the sharpening techniques for a particular edge......please share info on this topic.

Walker, Yes they were . I have several 119's and 120's from 1981 and they are thick/convex near the edge . Most I left the convex near the edge and have to sharpen them at a 23-25* angle . Then some I rebeveled to 15-16* edge and those are easier to sharpen and cut quick . DM

Here are some to get folks started. I'd be very open to other links, or to any issues with the content in these links.
